Senior Backend Engineer (B2B SaaS Startup)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a venture-backed B2B SaaS company based in Berlin that is transforming how businesses handle international trade compliance through AI-powered automation. Our client has achieved strong growth and works with recognizable enterprise customers across Europe. We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their product engineering team.

This is a hands-on technical role where you'll build and scale backend services that power intelligent automation workflows. You'll work across the stack with a bias toward backend systems, collaborating closely with AI engineers, product designers, and fellow engineers in a calm but ambitious startup environment.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end delivery of features from technical design through production release, working primarily on backend services with full-stack contribution
• Write server-side and client-side code within established TypeScript and Python codebases
• Lead technical design discussions, analyze trade-offs, and make architectural decisions for your projects
• Serve as the backend expert in cross-functional project teams, providing technical guidance and code review
• Partner with AI engineers to productionize machine learning prototypes and research into scalable features
• Collaborate with designers on user flows, feasibility analysis, and interface improvements
• Design and maintain automated testing infrastructure to ensure reliability at scale
• Set standards for code quality, architecture patterns, and engineering best practices
• Configure CI/CD tooling and developer experience improvements
• Mentor team members through code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building complex products in fast-paced environments
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field
• Deep proficiency in TypeScript, including advanced type-level programming
• Strong understanding of API design (REST, GraphQL), event-driven architecture, and common design patterns
• Solid experience with both relational databases (PostgreSQL) and caching systems (Redis or similar)
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform and associated services
• Familiarity with the following tech stack is highly valuable: React, Node.js, Prisma ORM, Python, FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, Terraform/OpenTofu
• Track record of championing code quality and establishing engineering best practices
• Active adoption of AI tools in your development workflow
• Thrives in dynamic startup environments with a learning mindset and openness to feedback
• Strong English communication skills (C1 level or above); German is a plus
• Interest in adjacent technical areas such as DevOps, security, frontend development, or AI engineering

Location & Working Arrangement

This role is based in Berlin, Germany, with a hybrid working model. Our client maintains an office in the Prenzlauer Berg/Mitte area with flexibility for remote work up to two days per week. The position requires authorization to work in Germany.
