Research Engineer, Machine Learning (RL Velocity)

Responsibilities

• Build and improve reinforcement learning training infrastructure that research teams depend on daily
• Identify and remove bottlenecks across the RL stack through debugging, profiling, and strategic re-architecture
• Partner closely with researchers and adjacent engineering teams to understand pain points and deliver tooling that accelerates their work
• Own the reliability and performance of research training runs end-to-end
• Contribute to design decisions that shape how large-scale reinforcement learning is executed

What We're Looking For

Our client is seeking a Research Engineer to join their RL Velocity team in London. This role is ideal for engineers who thrive on building platforms that multiply the impact of others.

Essential qualifications:

• Strong software engineering fundamentals with a proven track record of building performant, reliable systems
• Experience with ML infrastructure, distributed systems, or research tooling
• Passion for enabling others' work and finding leverage through platform development rather than individual experiments
• Comfort operating across the full stack, from low-level performance optimization to RL algorithms
• Bias toward shipping and iterating quickly, combined with high agency and collaborative mindset
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and professional experience

Highly valued experience:

• Large-scale distributed training (reinforcement learning, pre-training, or post-training)
• Familiarity with JAX, PyTorch, or similar ML frameworks
• Track record of operating at the intersection of research and infrastructure in fast-moving environments
