Research Engineer, Machine Learning (Reinforcement Learning)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential AI research organization seeking a Research Engineer, Machine Learning (Reinforcement Learning) in London. In this role, you will collaborate with researchers and engineers to advance large language model capabilities through reinforcement learning. Your work will blend research and engineering, requiring both implementation of novel approaches and contribution to research direction.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Architecting and optimizing core reinforcement learning infrastructure, from training abstractions to distributed experiment management across GPU clusters, scaling systems for increasingly complex research workflows
• Designing, implementing, and testing novel training environments, evaluations, and methodologies for reinforcement learning agents that push state-of-the-art boundaries
• Driving performance improvements through profiling, optimization, and benchmarking, implementing efficient caching solutions and debugging distributed systems to accelerate training and evaluation
• Collaborating across teams to develop automated testing frameworks, design clean APIs, and build scalable infrastructure that accelerates AI research
• Working on fundamental RL research for language models, including tool use for open-ended tasks, autonomous software generation, and reasoning improvements

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications:

• Proficiency in Python and async/concurrent programming with frameworks like Trio
• Experience with machine learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX)
• Industry experience in machine learning research
• Ability to balance research exploration with engineering implementation
• Strong code quality, testing, and performance focus
• Excellent systems design and communication skills
• Passion for AI impact and commitment to developing safe and beneficial systems
• Comfort with pair programming

Preferred qualifications:

• Familiarity with LLM architectures and training methodologies
• Experience with reinforcement learning techniques and environments
• Experience with virtualization and sandboxed code execution environments
• Experience with Kubernetes
• Experience with distributed systems or high-performance computing
• Experience with Rust and/or C++

Strong candidates need not have formal certifications, education credentials, academic research experience, or publication history.

Minimum education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience in a field relevant to the role.

Location: London, with a hybrid policy requiring at least 25% office presence. Some roles may require more time on-site.
