About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential sustainability technology company based in Berlin. Our client builds AI-powered solutions that help global organizations automate how environmental data is collected, analyzed, and acted upon. They work with major climate organizations and multinational enterprises across Europe.

This is a high-impact Backend/AI Product Engineer role where you'll own features end-to-end—from user discovery through technical implementation and deployment. You'll work in a small, high-ownership engineering team building enterprise-grade products that operate at significant scale within the ESG sector.

Responsibilities

• Own product features from conception to delivery, including understanding user problems, defining technical approaches, implementation, and continuous improvement
• Design and build scalable backend systems including APIs, data models, workflows, and infrastructure for complex enterprise applications
• Develop and ship applied AI/LLM features such as LLM chains, RAG systems, tool-using agents, structured-output pipelines, and evaluation workflows
• Create reusable, extensible platform components that support multiple user journeys and reporting workflows
• Strengthen system robustness through improved reliability, testing, observability, performance, and maintainability practices
• Work directly with users and product teams, using qualitative feedback and analytics to validate solutions
• Prototype and test new AI capabilities, converting promising concepts into production features
• Collaborate through pair programming, technical design discussions, and code reviews

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Strong professional backend engineering experience with a proven track record of shipping reliable production systems
• Experience in small, high-ownership product teams, ideally within startup or scale-up environments (approximately 5-20 engineers)
• Evidence of shipping meaningful products end-to-end rather than narrow component ownership
• Strong proficiency in Python (or willingness to quickly become productive in Python if coming from Java, Ruby, or TypeScript)
• Solid API, database, and systems design skills with ability to model complex workflows
• Applied AI/LLM experience or strong interest, ideally involving RAG, retrieval, tool use, agents, structured outputs, or evaluation systems
• Software quality mindset including testing, code review, CI/CD, and observability practices
• Cloud and container experience with understanding of production deployment and operations
• Fluent English (C1+) written and spoken

Preferred experience:

• Building workflow, reporting, questionnaire, or complex B2B SaaS products
• Backend technologies such as FastAPI, PostgreSQL, background job queues
• LLM frameworks and production AI systems
• Optimizing latency, cost, and reliability for AI workloads
• ESG, sustainability, climate tech, or corporate reporting domains
• German language skills
