Principal Product Designer, Retail

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential commerce technology client in a search for a Principal Product Designer, Retail. This is a rare senior individual-contributor role reporting directly to design leadership, focused on defining the future of agentic AI experiences for retail merchants.

Our client is building an intelligence layer that evolves from answering questions to taking autonomous action on behalf of business owners. There is no established playbook for how merchants delegate work to an AI agent, supervise it, build trust, and maintain control — and you'll help write that playbook.

This role has two centers of gravity: leading design for the agentic AI experience, and raising the craft bar across the entire design organization through hands-on contribution. You'll work alongside teams in every product area, showing what exceptional design looks like through making, not mandates. Mobile point-of-sale strategy will be a secondary focus.

Location: Canada (Toronto preferred; open to other locations in Ontario, Quebec, and Eastern Canada)

Responsibilities

• Define new interaction patterns for agentic AI — designing how merchants converse with, direct, supervise, and build trust in an intelligent agent working on their behalf
• Lead design for the AI experience end-to-end as a hands-on individual contributor, from concept and prototype through polished shipped product
• Raise craft standards across the organization through direct contribution — jumping into any product area to explore, elevate, and unblock critical work
• Lead vision work that rethinks core merchant experiences through hands-on exploration and prototyping that shapes strategy
• Prototype with AI daily using modern tools to move from intent to working prototype quickly, modeling this approach for other designers
• Shape mobile strategy with design thinking and hands-on support as an ongoing secondary focus
• Influence without authority by aligning designers, leaders, and cross-functional partners through clarity, storytelling, and exceptional work quality

What We're Looking For

• 12+ years of product design experience with a maker's mindset — moving fluidly between strategic thinking and detailed, polished execution
• A portfolio demonstrating exceptional hands-on craft across UX, interaction, and visual design — work that other designers point to
• Experience leading large, ambiguous initiatives across multiple teams and delivering measurable outcomes without formal authority
• Genuine fluency with AI: active use of LLMs and AI prototyping tools in your workflow, plus a strong point of view on designing AI-powered products
• Technical understanding sufficient to partner effectively with engineers — ability to build prototypes and reason about constraints
• Ability to influence senior stakeholders through clear communication, storytelling, and tangible design work
• Exceptional taste and the ability to push yourself and others toward greatness

This is not a management role. It's for a maker who can hold the full context of a large product portfolio while remaining the strongest hands-on designer in the room.
