About This Opportunity
We are representing a well-established, FCA-regulated financial services organization in the UK. Our client operates multiple regulated entities and is seeking an experienced Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) to lead their financial crime compliance programmes. This is a senior leadership position with end-to-end responsibility for anti-money laundering (AML), counter-terrorist financing (CTF), and sanctions controls across the business.
In this role, you will provide strategic and operational oversight of the financial crime risk management framework, advise on risk treatment across products and client segments, and ensure the continuous improvement of transaction monitoring and sanctions screening systems.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the AML/CTF and sanctions compliance frameworks across FCA-regulated entities
- Develop, implement, and maintain robust AML/CTF policies, controls, and procedures in line with UK regulatory requirements
- Provide oversight of transaction monitoring, internal suspicious activity review, and external reporting to the National Crime Agency
- Manage customer due diligence (CDD), enhanced due diligence (EDD), and sanctions screening processes
- Approve all new high-risk client relationships and periodic review outcomes for existing high-risk customers
- Maintain and regularly update the firm's business-wide financial crime risk assessments
- Deliver expert advice on AML and sanctions compliance across the customer lifecycle
- Coordinate internal assurance activity and support external audits and regulatory reviews
- Design and deliver training programmes to ensure staff understand their financial crime responsibilities
- Prepare regular reporting and management information for senior leadership, risk committees, and the board
- Produce an annual MLRO report to the Board of Directors assessing the overall framework and highlighting emerging risks
- Attend relevant committee and board meetings, support executive decision-making, and escalate programme-related issues
- Lead strategic AML framework initiatives and implementations
- Monitor regulatory developments and ensure timely policy updates
- Liaise with the FCA, National Crime Agency, and law enforcement authorities as required
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Significant experience in AML/CTF and financial crime compliance within a regulated financial services firm
- Deep understanding of UK Money Laundering Regulations, Proceeds of Crime Act, UK sanctions regime (OFSI), and relevant industry guidance (e.g., JMLSG)
- Proven track record of operating or overseeing transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and customer due diligence systems
- Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into actionable policy and operational controls
- Confident communicator with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and represent the firm in external engagements
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and resilient, with the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and manage competing priorities
Desirable:
- Experience in AML/CTF and financial crime compliance within a regulated cryptoasset, e-money, or payments firm
