Position Overview

Our talent team is representing a confidential aerospace client seeking a Flight Software Engineer to join their satellite development programs. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge space technology, contributing to the full lifecycle of flight software from requirements through operations. You'll be part of a small, dynamic team where versatility and enthusiasm for learning are essential.

Responsibilities

Flight Software Development (45%)

  • Upgrade and develop satellite flight software for new missions and platforms
  • Develop and integrate flight software applications using frameworks such as NASA's Core Flight System (cFS)
  • Design and maintain reusable flight software components, messaging architectures, and command/telemetry interfaces
  • Create in-house tools to analyze flight software performance and mission compatibility
  • Support software integration across spacecraft subsystems, flight computers, payloads, and ground systems
  • Participate in anomaly resolution and patch existing flight software
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers on hardware-in-the-loop test environments and flight hardware installation

Software Integration and Testing (45%)

  • Develop and execute verification tests using digital twin software and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) FlatSat systems
  • Establish test methodologies to validate compliance with customer requirements
  • Create software and tools for ground support equipment to test and validate flight software
  • Conduct end-to-end validation of command, telemetry, fault management, and autonomous operations software
  • Oversee official validation testing and maintain comprehensive documentation
  • Manage documentation including versioning, bug reporting, and test planning

Systems Modeling (5%)

  • Contribute to systems- and mission-level modeling and simulation tools
  • Develop software models of payloads for ground testing
  • Support development of satellite platform software models

Additional Responsibilities (5%)

  • Support internal and external working groups
  • Contribute to proposal writing and new business development
  • Assess software impacts of new hardware, operations concepts, and missions

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or related scientific field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 1 year with a Master's degree
  • Proven track record working with aerospace hardware and/or software systems from concept through operations
  • Proficiency in C/C++
  • US Citizenship required
  • Insatiable curiosity and demonstrated ability to learn and work independently

Technical Expertise (one or more areas):

  • Embedded software development and testing
  • Device driver development and software/hardware interfaces
  • Real-time operating systems programming, debugging, and testing
  • Cybersecurity
  • GNC algorithms design, analysis, testing, and implementation
  • Functional validation of embedded software on hardware
  • Software safety assurance
  • Network topology and configuration
  • Simulators: numerical, emulator, and hardware-in-the-loop
  • Software requirements and configuration management

Preferred Experience:

  • Spacecraft flight software development for satellites, spacecraft, launch vehicles, or autonomous aerospace systems
  • NASA Core Flight System (cFS) or similar spacecraft flight software architectures
  • Real-time operating systems such as RTEMS, VxWorks, Integrity, or embedded Linux
  • Spacecraft command and telemetry systems, CCSDS protocols, fault management, and onboard autonomy
  • Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), FlatSat, digital twin, or spacecraft integration and test environments
  • Spacecraft mission operations, anomaly resolution, and on-orbit software maintenance
