Engineering Lead – Human Influence

Responsibilities

Our client, a confidential AI safety research organisation, is seeking an Engineering Lead to manage and grow their Human Influence engineering team. This role sits at the intersection of advanced AI systems and human behaviour research, focusing on how AI influences beliefs, decisions, and actions.

As Engineering Lead, you will:

• Develop and execute an engineering roadmap aligned with research priorities in human-AI interaction and AI safety
• Lead engineering initiatives from concept through deployment, including AI capability evaluations, technical demonstrations, and large-scale human-AI interaction studies
• Design scalable system architectures for repeatable model evaluations and benchmarks
• Build robust data pipelines and automated experimental frameworks
• Manage and mentor a growing team of Research Engineers and Software Engineers
• Drive world-leading research using complex multi-agent setups, LLM fine-tuning (>100B parameters), and custom Reinforcement Learning environments
• Collaborate with non-technical stakeholders to translate research questions into engineering deliverables
• Shape how AI coding assistants integrate into team workflows and research collaboration

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications:

• Proven track record leading complex engineering or research projects from scoping through deployment or publication
• Clear understanding of AI safety literature and human influence topics
• Experience translating research questions into reproducible engineering tasks
• Strong software design skills, especially for cloud deployments and databases (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS)
• Production-quality Python code development experience
• Hands-on experience building or fine-tuning ML models, ideally LLMs, using PyTorch, Keras, JAX or similar
• Demonstrated success working with non-technical stakeholders on product or research roadmaps
• Excellent communication skills

Highly desirable:

• Experience shipping AI safety pipelines to production (evaluations, monitoring, custom model serving)
• Background using data to answer complex research questions through classifier training or LLM fine-tuning
• Frontend development experience (TypeScript) and node.js deployments
• At least one year of line management experience
• Experience hiring and mentoring technical staff
