About This Opportunity
Our talent team is representing a confidential AI infrastructure organization operating one of France's largest GPU and CPU compute clusters. We're seeking a Field Hardware Engineer to work hands-on maintaining and scaling critical high-performance computing systems that power advanced research and engineering workloads.
This is an on-site field role based in Bruyères-le-Châtel, with mobility across the Paris area and occasional travel to nearby regions. You'll execute complex hardware interventions, perform advanced diagnostics across compute/storage/network/cooling systems, and mentor junior engineers—directly impacting the reliability of infrastructure that enables breakthrough scientific work.
Responsibilities
- Lead vendor-level and multi-node operations including full rack work, complex recabling, post-restart diagnosis, and risk assessment with rollback planning
- Perform advanced diagnostics correlating symptoms across compute, storage, interconnect, and cooling systems using BMC/IPMI consoles, system indicators, and log analysis
- Coordinate RMA processes and vendor escalations for complex hardware issues
- Coach L1 engineers on safe practices (ESD, lockout/tagout), first-line triage, rack craftsmanship, and documentation quality through hands-on pairing
- Improve standard operating procedures, checklists, and propose automation tools (Python/Bash) for inventory sync, photo capture, dashboards, and alerts
- Enforce safety and compliance protocols including lockout/tagout, ESD, and PPE; maintain audit-ready tickets and change documentation
- Plan spares strategy, track failure trends, and drive proactive actions with hardware vendors
- Travel between sites in the Paris area and occasionally to other European or US locations
What We're Looking For
Required:
- 5+ years in data center/server hardware or L2/L3 hardware support with proven complex hands-on work in production HPC, AI, or cloud environments at scale
- End-to-end hardware expertise across CPU, memory, PCIe cards (including accelerators), NICs, PSUs, drives, network equipment, power distribution, and cooling systems (including direct liquid cooling)
- Strong diagnostic skills analyzing BMC/IPMI logs, Linux software logs, crashes, and CLI checks with methodical root cause analysis
- Impeccable safety discipline with ESD, lockout/tagout, and PPE practices; clean, labeled, auditable work habits
- Clear communication skills for status updates, handovers, and live coaching of L1 engineers; ability to create technical documentation
- Willingness to travel between sites in the Paris area and nearby regions, occasionally across Europe or to the US
Preferred:
- Experience with vendor management tools (iDRAC, iLO, IPMI)
- RAID and storage knowledge (NVMe, SAS, SATA)
- High-speed interconnect experience (Ethernet, InfiniBand)
- Coding and automation skills in Python or Bash for operations tools and reporting
- Familiarity with ticketing systems (Jira, ServiceNow), inventory/RMA workflows, and vendor coordination
