Engineering Manager (w/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization focused on digital transformation in the public sector. They are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a team of 5 engineers and drive their AI-first development approach.

This is a remote position based in Germany, requiring fluent German (C2) and professional English (B2+).

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of 5 engineers both technically and through personnel management, providing regular feedback and fostering individual development
• Drive cultural transformation toward AI-assisted development, where the majority of productive code is generated by AI agents under human direction
• Remain hands-on in development, making architectural decisions and solving complex technical problems while delivering direct product value
• Take ownership of reliable delivery, system stability, and availability within your area of responsibility
• Prioritize work based on value for users and business impact
• Manage technical debt strategically and ensure continuous team skill development
• Co-lead with a Product Manager in a dual leadership model
• Collaborate closely with other Engineering Managers, Senior Software Architects, and the Head of Development
• Drive recruiting and onboarding of new team members

What We're Looking For

Must-Have Requirements:

• Several years of experience in disciplinary and technical leadership of an engineering team
• Passion for staying close to the team and codebase, leading directly and personally
• Technical understanding at the architecture level with ability to contribute hands-on value
• Strong experience with TypeScript and Vue3 (frontend), Python (backend)
• Clear perspective on AI-first development: you can not only use AI agents but strategically direct, orchestrate, and control them, with the goal of AI generating the majority of code while humans define direction, architecture, and quality standards
• Experience with modern cloud and container infrastructure, CI/CD, and "you build it, you run it" culture
• Strong people and culture skills: empathy, active listening, conflict resolution, and ability to build sustainable trust
• Experience with situational leadership, adapting your style to team maturity and context
• Ownership mindset and accountability for team deliverables
• Willingness to challenge the status quo, experiment with new approaches, and inspire others toward change
• Fluent German (C2) and professional English (minimum B2)

Nice-to-Have:

• Experience in the public sector or with B2G products
• Experience building or scaling engineering organizations in startup/scale-up environments
