Engineering Manager (m/w/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization in München that is advancing digital transformation in the insurance sector. Our talent team is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead software engineering teams and drive technical initiatives across multiple cross-functional groups.

Responsibilities

• Provide both technical and people leadership to software engineers, supporting their professional and personal development
• Ensure engineering activities align with company vision and strategic product goals
• Own technical initiatives from conception through production deployment, including technical planning, architecture, quality assurance, and continuous improvement
• Work with Product Owners to prioritize technical topics in the product backlog and create transparency around dependencies, risks, and necessary investments
• Make informed technical decisions, review solution approaches, and ensure adherence to engineering standards, best practices, and quality requirements
• Collaborate closely with Product, Operations, customer-facing teams, and other stakeholders to connect technical capabilities with business requirements
• Continuously develop engineering processes, knowledge management formats, and standards
• Support long-term platform evolution and modernization with focus on stability, performance, maintainability, and scalability
• Accompany projects and products through to production operations and ensure reliable ongoing operations with teams

What We're Looking For

• Strong experience in software development and software architecture with ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to different audiences
• Extensive experience developing with Java, ideally with deep expertise in Spring Framework (especially Spring Boot) and common Java libraries and standards
• Ability to quickly familiarize yourself with large, complex codebases, recognize overarching relationships, and derive sound architectural decisions
• Excellent understanding of software architecture, design patterns, clean code, and modern engineering principles
• Strategic thinking with ability to develop and implement long-term plans for evolution, modernization, and incremental improvement of existing systems
• Enthusiasm for analyzing, refactoring, and sustainably improving existing systems while maintaining stability and performance
• Knowledge of databases, APIs, and the complete software development process from technical conception through implementation to operations
• Experience in technical and people leadership, coaching, and developing software engineers
• Ability to structure and prioritize technical projects and successfully implement them with various stakeholders
• Active promotion of AI adoption—from AI-supported software development through automated quality assurance to optimization of development workflows
• Confident communication with technical and non-technical contacts, able to operate effectively between engineering, product, management, and external partners
• Comfortable working in an agile environment, handling change constructively, and actively contributing to continuous improvement of development processes
• Experience with JavaScript frontend frameworks (Vue.js, React) is a plus
• Balance of technical understanding with good instinct for business context and entrepreneurial priorities
• Fluent German and English language skills, written and spoken
