About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential mixed-signal semiconductor organization seeking an Embedded Software Engineer for their Newbury, England location. This is a hybrid role requiring two days per week on-site.
Our client develops cutting-edge DSP and microcontroller solutions for leading consumer electronics brands. You'll work at the intersection of hardware and firmware, building high-performance embedded systems for DSP architectures and microcontrollers including RISC V and Arm Cortex M/A platforms.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain embedded firmware for DSP cores and MCUs (RISC V and/or Arm)
- Build and optimize real-time signal-processing pipelines using fixed-point and/or floating-point arithmetic, including FFTs, filters, codecs, and feature extraction
- Develop firmware in C/C++ with selective assembly, focusing on performance, memory, and power optimization
- Work with SoC/board peripherals including DMA, timers, SPI, I²C, UART, I²S/TDM, PWM, GPIO, and bus fabrics
- Bring up new hardware: boot flows, clocks, memory maps, interrupt vectors, peripheral initialization, and early validation
- Implement and debug drivers and RTOS components (Zephyr or equivalent), including task scheduling, synchronization, and ISR design
- Develop test strategies including unit tests, hardware-in-the-loop tests, automation, and production diagnostics
- Use debugging and profiling tools: JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, trace tools, and cycle-accurate profiling
- Collaborate with hardware, FPGA/ASIC, systems, and application teams on requirements and interfaces
- Produce technical documentation including architecture notes, interface specifications, timing budgets, and bring-up guides
- Participate in code reviews and establish best practices for quality, safety, and maintainability
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Strong professional experience developing embedded firmware in C/C++ for MCUs and/or DSPs
- Hands-on experience with RISC V and/or Arm architecture (Cortex M/A), including interrupts, memory, caches, and performance characteristics
- Deep understanding of embedded fundamentals: register-level programming, memory-mapped I/O, concurrency (ISRs, RTOS tasks), race conditions, timing determinism, fixed-point arithmetic
- Proven ability to optimize firmware through cycle counting, memory layout optimization, DMA usage, cache behavior tuning, and minimizing latency/jitter
- Experience with GCC/LLVM toolchains, cross-compilation, CMake/Make, Meson, linker scripts, and map files
- Strong debugging skills using JTAG/SWD and root-cause analysis of timing and performance issues
- Git source control expertise and disciplined engineering practices including code reviews and CI
- Must be based within commutable distance of Newbury or willing to relocate
Preferred:
- Experience with Python for test tooling and scripts
- RTOS/OS experience: Zephyr, embedded Linux
- Proficiency with GDB, OpenOCD, J-Link, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and trace tools
- Experience with DSP libraries (CMSIS-DSP, vendor libraries) and SIMD/vector optimization
- Knowledge of bootloaders, secure boot, OTA updates, and field diagnostics
- Understanding of digital communications or audio processing domains
- Exposure to safety/security standards (MISRA C/C++, IEC 61508, ISO 26262)
