Director, Software Engineering (AI Workflows & Ecosystem)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization that is building intelligent workflow systems at scale. This is a rare opportunity to lead the evolution of an AI-powered platform from isolated features into a unified, intelligent system that proactively helps users run their businesses.

Our client has AI in production today—handling voice interactions, drafting communications, and powering product features. The challenge now is integration: moving from fragmented capabilities to a cohesive system that thinks across the entire platform, anticipates user needs, and reduces manual decision-making for time-constrained professionals.

This role owns that transformation. You'll lead the technical vision and organizational structure that turns AI-powered features into AI-powered business operations.

Responsibilities

You will have end-to-end ownership of the AI system layer across the product:

• Define how intelligence flows across the platform—how decisions are made, how context moves between workflows, and how actions are triggered
• Build and scale a multi-team engineering organization of approximately 30 engineers across 4–6 teams, with 4–6 Engineering Managers reporting to you
• Own the technical scope including AI foundations (models, orchestration, evaluations, guardrails), user-facing intelligence layers, workflow execution systems, integration platforms, and emerging surfaces
• Establish agentic workflows that reason, decide, act, and evaluate across jobs, customers, payments, and communications
• Drive system reliability, safety protocols, and failure mode handling for production AI systems
• Partner closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to ensure AI serves measurable customer outcomes
• Create shared AI primitives that enable teams to build faster without reinventing infrastructure
• Balance speed, quality, and safety tradeoffs as the organization scales
• Challenge assumptions and drive AI adoption across engineering, product, and the broader company

What We're Looking For

AI Systems Experience (Non-Negotiable):

• Production experience building LLM-based or agentic systems where AI makes decisions and takes actions, not just assists
• Deep understanding of agent orchestration, tool use, workflow execution, evaluation (offline and online), observability, and guardrails
• Hands-on knowledge of reliability and safety in real production environments
• Demonstrated ability to reason about tradeoffs between autonomy and control
• You don't need to code daily, but you must be able to reason at the system architecture level

Engineering Leadership:

• Track record managing managers across multiple teams in complex, ambiguous problem spaces
• Experience building organizations that scale, not just teams that ship features
• Ability to drive cross-organizational alignment and influence without direct authority
• History of balancing shipping velocity with infrastructure investment and technical debt

Product and Systems Thinking:

• You think in systems, not features—understanding how user workflows connect end-to-end
• Strong partnership skills with Product and Design organizations
• Focus on customer outcomes and business impact, not just technical sophistication
• Ability to push teams beyond feature thinking into system-level reasoning

Execution Excellence:

• Proven ability to move quickly while maintaining system integrity
• Sound judgment on when to iterate versus when to redesign
• Experience making intelligent tradeoffs in fast-paced environments
