About This Opportunity
We are representing a well-funded fintech organization in their search for a Director of Data Platform. This is a remote leadership role where you will own the data strategy, lead a growing Platform Engineering team, and drive the execution of a critical roadmap that serves every function across the business.
In this player-coach position, you will manage three team leads and balance operational delivery—including partner invoicing, embedded analytics, and regulatory reporting—with strategic initiatives such as self-service analytics, AI-powered tooling, and enterprise search capabilities. The data platform you'll oversee processes hundreds of millions of events daily and powers invoicing, revenue attribution, compliance, sales, and product analytics.
You will stay close to the technical architecture while setting direction for the team, making build-vs-buy decisions, and representing data capabilities to executive leadership.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Platform Engineering and ETL teams; manage team leads, set priorities, and ensure timely delivery
- Own the Data Lakehouse architecture leveraging Trino, Iceberg/GCS, Airflow, Airbyte, Redpanda CDC, and dbt
- Drive partner invoicing accuracy and evolution: ensure invoicing logic is versioned, reproducible, and scales with new pricing mechanisms and product launches
- Deliver embedded analytics by exposing warehouse data to partners via dashboards, SSR pipelines, and API-based reporting; own row-level security and entitlements
- Support product launches with data change management: coordinate data impact analysis for new offerings across downstream datasets, dashboards, and reverse ETL
- Accelerate self-service analytics by implementing semantic layers, data catalogues, and conversational BI to shift the team from ad-hoc queries to strategic projects
- Guide AI/ML enablement: oversee enterprise AI search, agent-based workflow automation, and LLM-powered analytics; balance vendor solutions with in-house development
- Collaborate with Finance, Sales, Product, Compliance, and Customer Success to translate business needs into data products
- Manage infrastructure costs and keep data-to-cloud cost ratios under target as assets under custody grow
- Operate production systems: own on-call processes, incident response, and SLOs for data freshness, accuracy, and availability
What We're Looking For
Must-Have Qualifications:
- 8+ years in data engineering, including 3+ years managing data teams (leads and individual contributors)
- Deep experience with modern data stack: dbt, Trino/Presto or equivalent query engines, Apache Iceberg or similar table formats, cloud object storage
- Hands-on experience with ETL/ELT patterns at scale: CDC (Debezium/Kafka), batch (Airflow/dbt), streaming, and reverse ETL
- Track record of building self-service analytics capabilities for non-technical stakeholders
- Experience with financial data: trading, invoicing, revenue attribution, or regulatory reporting in fintech or financial services
- Proficiency in Python and SQL; comfortable reading code, reviewing PRs, and making architecture decisions
- Experience managing distributed/remote teams across multiple time zones
- Strong stakeholder management: able to translate between executive priorities and engineering execution
- Experience with GCP (GKE, GCS, BigQuery migration), Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform
Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
- Experience with brokerage or broker-dealer operations (clearing, settlement, market making, reconciliation)
- Familiarity with LLM/AI tooling: MCP, vector databases, enterprise search, conversational BI
- Background in compliance analytics (AML, KYC, margin calls)
- Exposure to open-source data catalogues and data quality frameworks
