Director, AI Center of Excellence

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential EdTech organization that is establishing an AI Center of Excellence. Our client seeks a Director to lead AI transformation across the enterprise, building the infrastructure, governance, and operating model that will make strategic AI adoption a reality across every function.

This role reports to senior data leadership and will be responsible for turning fragmented AI initiatives into a cohesive, scalable capability that delivers measurable operational impact each quarter.

Responsibilities

• Stand up and operate shared AI infrastructure including integrations, data boundaries, approved-model registry, and a standard AI stack with single sign-on and data-loss prevention
• Charter and run the governance council, implementing security, privacy, approval, and quality monitoring frameworks that enable teams to move quickly without creating risk
• Set AI Center of Excellence priorities in collaboration with cross-functional department leaders and own the strategic roadmap
• Define standard metrics for cost, throughput, and quality; report progress through an AI efficiency scorecard that demonstrates clear, honest impact
• Create centralized training libraries and enablement programs in partnership with HR, building systems for knowledge sharing across the organization
• Lead a centralized-expertise, decentralized-execution operating model where the Center of Excellence owns infrastructure and governance while functions own outcomes
• Build and develop the Center of Excellence team, including forward-deployed AI engineers and administrators

What We're Looking For

• 12+ years of experience in technology, data, or product roles, including 5+ years leading teams with a track record of delivering measurable operational impact at scale
• 2+ years working directly with AI or machine-learning systems, with hands-on familiarity with modern AI tooling, agentic systems, and large language models
• Deep understanding of production AI infrastructure requirements including model registries, integrations, single sign-on, and data-loss prevention
• Strong governance experience setting guardrails for security, privacy, and quality that accelerate rather than impede team velocity
• Proven ability to influence across organizations from individual contributors to executives, building coalitions in decentralized operating models
• Bias for clear metrics and transparent reporting; you measure what matters and communicate progress honestly
• Experience building enablement and training programs that drive actual behavioral change
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to make complex technical topics accessible to non-technical audiences
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, data, business, or related field, or equivalent practical experience; advanced degree preferred
