AECOM is hiring a Design Manager, Data Centers to lead colocation and hyper-scale projects across the United States. This is a hands-on, client-facing role with a flexible, primarily remote schedule based from any AECOM office nationwide.

About the Role

As a Design Manager for Data Centers at AECOM, you will steer mission-critical projects through every phase — site due diligence, campus planning, conceptual through detailed design, construction documents, and construction administration. Working alongside global teams across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, you will support high-profile, fast-paced programs for leading clients. The position is mostly remote, with occasional, pre-scheduled travel for client meetings, project milestones, and onsite collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct due diligence and multidiscipline design teams — architecture, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, fire protection, ICT, and BMS/EPMS — to deliver on quality, schedule, and client requirements.
  • Build and uphold project and program management plans across multiple sites.
  • Lead and participate in client and stakeholder meetings, proactively managing and communicating change internally and externally.
  • Spot issues early and craft inventive solutions while keeping all parties updated.
  • Prepare technical and financial proposals for new and add/move/change data center projects.
  • Cultivate trusted, lasting relationships with client stakeholders and decision-makers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering plus ten years of relevant experience, or an equivalent blend of education and experience.
  • Preferred: a Master's in the same fields, P.E. or Architecture License, and 12 years in design and/or project management.
  • Preferred: Lean Six Sigma certification, Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Professional, and 12 years in colocation or hyper-scale data center design management and engineering.
  • Active leadership in data center or mission-critical trade organizations is a plus.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication, strong presentation skills, team leadership, and the ability to thrive in dynamic, time-sensitive settings with minimal oversight.

Relocation is not offered; visa sponsorship is available. New hires must attend an in-person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office.

Build the skills for this role

Prioritize: data-center or mission-critical design coordination; multi-discipline QA/QC; client and consultant management; remote project delivery tools. No certification list was provided in DATA.

    • Walk a data-center or industrial design you led: scope, interfaces, risks.
    • How you manage remote multi-office AECOM-style teams.
    • Trade-offs among power, cooling, schedule, and cost.
    • Questions on AECOM’s delivery model for infrastructure-scale projects.

Strong fit if you have design leadership on complex facilities (ideally data centers), comfort with remote U.S. delivery, and interest in AECOM’s infrastructure consulting environment.
