Role Overview

We are representing a confidential semiconductor organization in Aachen, Germany, seeking an experienced Defect Inspection Engineer to join their cleanroom operations team. This role focuses on ensuring wafer quality through automated optical inspection systems and advanced defect detection methodologies.

You will work with cutting-edge inspection technologies to identify particles, scratches, haze, and surface irregularities that could impact manufacturing yields. This position requires hands-on cleanroom experience and the ability to collaborate across process, equipment, and integration teams to optimize inspection workflows and drive continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform automated optical inspection (AOI) and unpatterned wafer inspection on silicon substrates, epitaxial layers, and polished wafers
  • Set up, qualify, and optimize inspection recipes to maximize defect detection sensitivity and repeatability
  • Fine-tune inspection tool parameters to improve overall inspection quality and system performance
  • Analyze defect data to identify trends, root causes, and potential process excursions
  • Generate defect maps, Pareto charts, and comprehensive reports to communicate findings to stakeholders
  • Translate defect data into actionable insights for process engineering teams
  • Participate in Design of Experiments (DOE) to systematically optimize inspection parameters
  • Troubleshoot inspection-related issues and support continuous improvement initiatives in defect detection and classification
  • Collaborate closely with process, equipment, and integration engineering teams in a cleanroom environment

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, materials science, physics, or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in semiconductor inspection, specifically with AOI and unpatterned wafer inspection
  • Proven experience with unpatterned wafer inspection systems such as SPx, and AOI tools such as Eagle or Dragonfly
  • Solid understanding of semiconductor process flows including polishing, epitaxy, and cleaning operations
  • Familiarity with defect classification techniques, SEM review, and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Proficiency with AOI and defect-review software platforms such as KLA Klarity and Camtek Inspecta
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize inspection tools and recipe parameters for sensitivity, quality, and repeatability
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret defect data and identify improvement opportunities
  • Proficiency in JMP for statistical analysis, data visualization, and design of experiments
  • Familiarity with MATLAB or Python is advantageous
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate across functional areas
