Data Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential quantitative trading firm seeking a Data Engineer to join their London team. In this role, you will transform complex, real-world datasets into reliable inputs that drive research and trading decisions. Our client depends on data from diverse sources—ranging from global news and historical weather patterns to deidentified consumer spending data and market feed captures—to understand markets and the broader economy.

You will collaborate closely with trading desks to identify data requirements, evaluate potential datasets, and build robust pipelines that ingest and transform external information. This position requires you to interpret what data represents and determine the most effective way to structure it. When off-the-shelf solutions fall short, you will contribute to building proprietary tools and systems.

This is a collaborative but ownership-driven role that combines engineering rigor, analytical thinking, and product intuition. You will develop deep domain expertise and use that knowledge to prioritize what to build next.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement data pipelines that ingest, clean, and transform data from a wide variety of external sources
• Work directly with trading teams to understand their data needs and translate requirements into technical solutions
• Evaluate new datasets for quality, relevance, and potential value to trading strategies
• Investigate unfamiliar data sources to understand their structure, meaning, and appropriate representation
• Build and maintain tools and infrastructure that support the firm's data operations
• Own projects from conception through production deployment and ongoing maintenance
• Develop expertise in specific data domains and use that understanding to guide technical decisions

What We're Looking For

• Strong programming skills in any language; Python experience is a plus
• Ability to write clear, correct, and maintainable code
• Proficiency with SQL and DataFrame libraries such as pandas or Polars
• Intellectual curiosity and a meticulous approach to data investigation
• Enjoyment of the detective work required to make sense of complex, unfamiliar datasets
• Clear and concise communication skills
• Fluency in English required
