Assistant Controller

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology client in their search for an Assistant Controller. This is a senior accounting leadership position that will partner with executive finance leadership to oversee accounting operations, technical accounting, financial reporting, and related functions across a growing organization.

This role offers significant scope and impact—owning the technical accounting and reporting governance framework globally while supporting cross-functional teams including Finance, Legal, Tax, People Operations, Sales, and external auditors. The position is leveled at Senior Manager or Director based on experience and demonstrated leadership capability.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with a passion for people development, process improvement, and innovation. You'll help scale the accounting organization by developing talent, strengthening controls, improving close discipline, and championing practical automation to build a finance function that is fast, accurate, and built for growth.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical accounting function—leading U.S. GAAP research, policy development, and audit-ready documentation while ensuring technical conclusions are sound, scalable, and aligned with business strategy
• Lead core accounting operations end-to-end, including payroll accounting, order-to-cash, close governance, and reconciliations with strong controls and continuous cycle time improvement
• Manage international accounting and tax compliance operations—multi-currency consolidation, intercompany eliminations, statutory reporting, and cross-border tax filings—while serving as liaison to external auditors and tax advisors
• Build, coach, and develop a high-performing accounting team with clear standards, scalable playbooks, and a culture of technical excellence and accountability
• Drive accounting transformation through process standardization, automation, and responsible AI adoption to build a faster, more scalable finance function
• Establish and strengthen the internal controls environment—designing, documenting, and maintaining SOPs, control frameworks, and process standards that are audit-ready and scalable
• Drive SOX readiness through control design, scoping, and deficiency remediation while championing SOP adoption through structured training and clear ownership
• Partner with revenue recognition, leases, equity compensation, impairments, business combinations, strategic transactions, and emerging standards implementation

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience with significant leadership across technical accounting, financial reporting, controls, and operational accounting
• Active CPA license (required)
• Public accounting experience, preferably Big 4 or national firm, plus experience in a technology, SaaS, or complex business environment
• Deep technical accounting expertise with a track record of translating complex U.S. GAAP guidance into practical, scalable business applications
• Proven experience preparing, reviewing, and approving technical accounting memos, policies, audit support, and executive-level accounting conclusions
• Excellence in leading and developing team members, setting review standards, and building repeatable operating practices
• Hands-on experience with month-end close, reconciliations, flux analysis, journal entry review, accruals, and intercompany activity
• Exceptional communication and cross-functional influence skills with ability to explain technical accounting to finance and non-finance leaders
• Comfort operating in fast-paced environments requiring strategic judgment, practical decision-making, and disciplined execution
• Bias toward continuous improvement with practical interest in AI, automation, and systems-enabled workflows

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in SaaS, software, marketplace, subscription, or high-growth technology environments
• Experience with ASC 606, equity-based compensation, software capitalization, leases, impairments, business combinations, and other complex technical accounting areas
• Experience supporting IPO readiness, public-company reporting, SOX readiness, or finance transformation initiatives
• Experience partnering with executive leadership, external auditors, and legal or tax stakeholders on complex accounting matters
• Familiarity with NetSuite, close automation tools, reporting automation, BI tools, or similar accounting systems
• Experience evaluating or implementing AI-enabled finance tools and building practical processes and playbooks

Pay

Our client has indicated a salary range of $150,000 - $200,000 annually for this role, with actual compensation determined by skills, experience, and location. The position may also include equity and a comprehensive benefits package.
