Applied AI, Technical Lead, Forward Deployed AI Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology organization seeking a Technical Lead for Applied AI Engineering in Munich. Our client is building enterprise-scale AI solutions for high-stakes industries including finance, manufacturing, healthcare, and the public sector. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you'll drive complex AI projects from conception through production deployment.

Responsibilities

• Deliver critical code as an individual contributor on complex AI projects, staying hands-on with coding, reviewing, and optimizing solutions to de-risk challenging technical problems
• Lead technical teams of Applied AI Engineers, providing mentorship, technical guidance, and establishing best practices for deploying generative AI applications across industries
• Lead technical discussions during pre-sales engagements, translating customer requirements into actionable solutions and communicating technological advantages to diverse stakeholders
• Design and oversee implementation of complex AI systems including fine-tuning, RAG architectures, agentic workflows, and custom LLM applications
• Drive innovation by identifying emerging trends in AI, evaluating new tools and methodologies, and championing best practices for fine-tuning, inference, and deployment
• Collaborate closely with product managers, researchers, and engineers to ensure seamless integration of customer feedback into product development cycles

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Fluent English communication skills
• PhD or Master's degree in AI, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related field
• 7-8+ years of experience in AI/ML, with at least 2+ years in technical leadership roles (Tech Lead, Engineering Manager, or Solutions Architect) focused on AI products or enterprise solutions
• Proven track record of leading teams to deliver complex AI projects from prototyping to production in industries such as tech, finance, healthcare, or industrial automation
• Deep expertise in fine-tuning LLMs, advanced RAG systems, agentic architectures, and deploying NLP applications at scale
• Proficiency in Python, PyTorch, and modern AI frameworks (e.g., LangChain, Hugging Face)
• Strong software engineering skills including API design, backend/full-stack development, and system architecture
• Excellent technical communication abilities, with capacity to articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences including executives
• Thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments with passion for mentoring and growing technical talent

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and MLOps tools
• Contributions to open-source projects, particularly in the LLM or AI space
• Experience in customer-facing roles (Solutions Architect, Customer Engineer, or Technical Product Manager) focused on enterprise AI adoption
• Track record of driving technical strategy and influencing product direction based on customer needs and market opportunities
