Senior Backend Engineer – Commercial Systems and Intelligence

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join a newly formed Commercial Systems and Intelligence team in Berlin. In this role, you will build the core infrastructure that powers merchant acquisition attribution, commission automation, and lifecycle intelligence.

Your work will include:

• Aggregating data across multiple systems to determine which acquisition channels or sales agents drove merchant actions such as signups and product adoption
• Establishing data models, API contracts, and rule definitions to automate manual commission workflows for field sales, telesales, partnerships, and referral programs
• Building a centralized Lifecycle Event Log that stores curated merchant events for use across attribution, recommendations, customer support, and sales operations
• Developing internal backoffice tools and APIs that enable sales representatives and leadership to monitor commissions, modify commission plans, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes
• Defining and documenting API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns for adoption by other engineering teams
• Establishing best practices for testing, observability, and incident response within a greenfield squad environment
• Leveraging AI and agentic coding tools deliberately to scaffold services, write tests, explore codebases, and draft documentation while maintaining full accountability for production systems

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate brings strong backend engineering expertise and thrives in early-stage, high-autonomy environments. You should have:

• Solid backend engineering experience in Go, or expertise in typed languages with the ability to ramp up quickly
• Proven experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns
• Fluency with relational and analytical databases such as PostgreSQL and Snowflake, with the judgment to choose the right tool for each use case
• Experience building Kafka-based, event-driven systems and understanding of event sourcing and CDC patterns
• Background in auditable, high-trust systems where every decision must be traceable, ideally in fintech, payments, or similar regulated domains
• Track record of building services from scratch in greenfield, early-stage teams with limited prior context
• Strong testing, observability, and incident response practices treated as first-class engineering concerns
• Resourcefulness and adaptability, with the ability to take end-to-end ownership and adjust quickly as priorities evolve
• Ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences, translating ambiguous problems into clear engineering deliverables and explaining trade-offs to diverse stakeholders
• Pragmatic judgment to balance shipping value quickly with doing critical work properly
• Mentorship instincts and a commitment to raising the bar for those around you
