We are representing a confidential insurance technology organization based in München that is transforming how pension, life, and health insurance processes are managed across Europe. Our client is seeking a Senior Java Engineer who excels at understanding and evolving complex, mature codebases while maintaining system stability and performance.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced engineer who doesn't just write code, but who can see the architectural big picture and develop strategic approaches to technical evolution. You'll take ownership of core platform components and play a key role in modernizing the software landscape.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of core components within a Java-based insurance platform
• Analyze and understand existing architecture, dependencies, and business logic across large codebases
• Develop and implement strategies for evolving and modernizing software architecture
• Design, build, and maintain high-quality, scalable, and reliable Java applications and services
• Mentor fellow engineers on architectural best practices and clean code principles
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate complex requirements into sustainable technical solutions
• Lead initiatives to improve code quality, reduce technical debt, and enhance system performance

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of experience in Java development with deep expertise in Spring Framework (especially Spring Boot) and standard libraries
• Proven ability to quickly understand and effectively manage large, complex codebases
• Excellent understanding of software architecture principles, design patterns, and best practices
• Strategic thinking skills with the ability to develop and execute long-term plans for code evolution
• Experience and enjoyment in refactoring and improving existing systems while ensuring stability
• Solid understanding of databases, APIs, and the complete software development lifecycle
• Ability to thrive in dynamic, agile environments and contribute to continuous improvement
• Strong mentoring and collaboration skills

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are competitive with the München market for senior engineering roles.
