Platform Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing, FCA-regulated insurance technology organization that is building out its platform and security capabilities. They are seeking a Platform Engineer to join their infrastructure team and play a critical role in strengthening their cloud security posture and compliance automation.

This is a remote position based in the United Kingdom. You will work within a collaborative platform squad that builds and maintains the AWS infrastructure, deployment pipelines, tooling and engineering standards that the entire engineering organization depends on.

The role has a strong security focus. Much of your first year will be spent building tooling that demonstrates security controls are working: automated compliance checks, reporting, and evidence collection to support ISO 27001 commitments. You will also help tighten access controls across the cloud estate and take ownership of edge and network security tooling.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain secure platform foundations

• Design, build and maintain shared cloud infrastructure, tooling and deployment pipelines for other engineering teams
• Define infrastructure as code to ensure environments are consistent, repeatable and reviewable
• Make secure configuration the default across all deployments
• Maintain edge and network security tooling that protects services
• Share operational ownership of the platform, responding to requests and issues from other squads

Make security controls provable

• Build automated checks that continuously test the cloud estate against security and compliance requirements
• Automate collection and reporting of evidence for ISO 27001, replacing manual effort
• Surface and report on gaps, drift and findings so they can be prioritized and resolved
• Work with the Head of Security to turn written policy into controls enforced by tooling

Strengthen access and identity controls

• Review and tighten access across cloud accounts, working towards least privilege
• Improve management of secrets, credentials and machine identities
• Make access changes auditable and straightforward for engineers to request and review

Extend platform standards beyond AWS

• Apply standards, tooling and controls built in AWS to the Google Cloud estate
• Work with teams using Google Cloud to understand their needs and identify gaps

Team collaboration and self-development

• Work closely with squad members and stakeholders using pair and mob programming
• Support engineers across other squads who use the platform
• Build shared understanding through pairing, discussions and reviews
• Document work clearly to support knowledge sharing and future maintenance
• Take ownership of your learning journey and technical development

What We're Looking For

Required experience and skills:

• Commercial experience building and maintaining cloud infrastructure on a major cloud provider (AWS, Google Cloud or Azure)
• Hands-on experience defining infrastructure as code using CDK, Terraform or similar
• Experience building and maintaining continuous integration and deployment pipelines
• Good working understanding of cloud security fundamentals, including identity and access management, secrets management, network controls and encryption
• Proficiency in at least one scripting language, ideally Python
• Comfort working in a regulated environment with ISO 27001 commitments

Highly desirable (at least one of the following):

• A security specialism, such as cloud security posture management, security tooling, threat modeling or compliance automation
• Experience across more than one cloud provider, ideally both AWS and Google Cloud

Technical environment:

• Cloud platforms: AWS (primary), Google Cloud
• Languages: Python
• Infrastructure: CDK, GitHub Actions
• Other tools: MongoDB, Aikido, Cloudflare
• Serverless and event-driven architectures
• Fully automated deployment pipelines with multiple daily releases

Pay

This is a permanent, full-time remote position based in the United Kingdom. The role requires a distraction-free work area and reliable internet connection (minimum 25Mbps). The client provides home office setup support including technology and desk allowance.
