Senior Backend Engineer – Golang

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Senior Backend Engineer - Golang to join their team in Cologne, Germany. This is a greenfield opportunity within a newly formed squad responsible for building critical infrastructure that powers merchant acquisition attribution, commission automation, and lifecycle analytics.

You'll be joining at the ground floor, establishing technical foundations, defining architecture patterns, and shaping how a high-trust, data-intensive system operates at scale. This role sits at the intersection of backend engineering, data infrastructure, and business operations—requiring both technical depth and the ability to translate complex requirements into production systems.

Responsibilities

• Build data aggregation pipelines to determine attribution across multiple acquisition channels and sales touchpoints
• Design and implement API contracts, data models, and rule engines that automate manual commission workflows for field sales, telesales, partnerships, and merchant referrals
• Develop a centralized Lifecycle Event Log storing curated merchant events (signups, product usage, verification, purchases) used across attribution, recommendations, support, and sales systems
• Create internal backoffice tools and APIs enabling sales representatives and leadership to monitor commissions, modify plans, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes
• Define and document API schemas, versioning strategies, and integration patterns for adoption by other engineering teams
• Establish best practices for testing, observability, and incident response within a newly formed squad environment
• Leverage AI and agentic coding tools strategically to scaffold services, generate tests, explore codebases, and draft documentation while maintaining full ownership of shipped code

What We're Looking For

• Strong backend engineering experience in Go, or proficiency in statically typed languages with readiness to ramp up quickly in Go
• Proven track record designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns
• Fluency with relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) and judgment to select appropriate data stores for specific use cases
• Experience building Kafka-based event-driven systems with understanding of event sourcing and change data capture (CDC) patterns
• Background in auditable, high-trust systems where traceability is essential—fintech, payments, or similar regulated domains strongly preferred
• Experience building services from scratch in greenfield, early-stage teams with minimal prior context, and enthusiasm for that ambiguity
• Commitment to testing, observability, and incident response as first-class engineering concerns, not afterthoughts
• Resourcefulness and adaptability with end-to-end ownership mindset; ability to do more with less and adjust as priorities evolve
• Ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences, translating ambiguous problems into clear engineering work and explaining trade-offs to both engineers and business stakeholders
• Pragmatic judgment knowing when "good enough" ships value versus when rigor is genuinely required
• Mentorship instincts that raise the bar for team output, not just individual contributions
