Senior Backend Engineer – Golang

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Senior Backend Engineer - Golang to join their newly formed Commercial Systems and Intelligence team in Düsseldorf, Germany. This is a greenfield opportunity to build the infrastructure that powers merchant acquisition attribution, commission automation, and lifecycle analytics from the ground up.

You'll be joining at the very beginning, shaping how the squad works, the architecture it builds on, and the standards it holds itself to. This role sits at the intersection of data, backend engineering, and sales operations, building systems that sales representatives, leadership, and analysts can trust.

Responsibilities

• Aggregate data across the ecosystem to determine which acquisition channel or sales agent drove merchant actions such as signups and product adoption
• Establish data models, API contracts, and rule definitions that automate manual commission workflows for field sales, tele-sales agents, partnerships, and referrals
• Build a centralized Lifecycle Event Log storing curated merchant lifecycle events used across attribution, recommendations, customer support, and sales
• Develop internal backoffices and APIs for sales representatives and leaders to monitor commissions, modify plans, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes
• Define and document API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns for adoption by other engineering teams
• Establish best practices for testing, observability, and incident response within a newly formed squad
• Leverage AI and agentic coding tools to scaffold services, write tests, explore unfamiliar code, and draft documentation while maintaining full accountability

What We're Looking For

• Strong backend engineering background in Go, or typed-language generalist ready to ramp up quickly
• Experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns
• Fluency in relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) with the ability to choose the right tool for each use case
• Experience building Kafka-based, event-driven systems with understanding of event sourcing and CDC patterns
• Background in auditable, high-trust systems where every decision must be traceable (fintech, payments, or similar domains)
• Track record building services from scratch in greenfield, early-stage squads with limited prior context
• Strong testing, observability, and incident response practices treated as first-class concerns
• Resourceful and adaptable with end-to-end ownership mindset
• Ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences, translating fuzzy problems into clear engineering work
• Pragmatic approach, knowing when good enough ships value and when something needs to be done properly
• Mentorship instincts, raising the bar for people around you
