Software Engineer, Sustaining Engineering

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open-source technology organization in their search for a Software Engineer, Sustaining Engineering. This is a fully remote position open to candidates worldwide.

Our client operates at the forefront of Linux-based infrastructure, serving enterprise customers who depend on open-source solutions for cloud computing, containerization, and distributed systems. You'll work on critical issues spanning the entire stack—from bare metal through virtualization, storage, networking, orchestration platforms, and the applications running on top.

This role requires exceptional breadth: you'll troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems across multiple layers, languages, and technologies. You'll collaborate with upstream communities, develop fixes, backport patches, and ensure enterprise-grade stability for mission-critical systems used by millions globally.

Responsibilities

• Resolve complex customer problems related to Linux, kernel issues, distributed storage systems, container orchestration, and cloud infrastructure
• Maintain close working relationships with field engineering, support, and product development teams
• Participate actively in upstream open-source communities
• Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and work with upstream projects for inclusion
• Review code produced by peer engineers
• Demonstrate sound technical judgment in selecting methods and techniques
• Prioritize work effectively and manage time against shifting priorities
• Contribute to team discussions aimed at improving processes, tools, and documentation
• Maintain clear, technical, and concise communication with distributed teams
• Travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings and conferences

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Professional experience as a software engineer
• Background in Computer Science, STEM, or similar field
• Strong experience with Linux and at least one of: Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, or similar cloud technologies
• Strong development experience with at least one of: Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux
• Ability to troubleshoot using debugging tools like gdb
• Familiarity with git source code repositories and branching workflows
• Exceptional academic track record
• Willingness to travel up to four times per year for internal events
