Staff Frontend Engineer – Design Systems

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Staff Frontend Engineer to lead their design systems engineering practice. This is a high-impact role where you'll set technical direction for a component library serving thousands of users across web and mobile platforms. You'll work at the intersection of design, engineering, and platform strategy—helping product teams ship faster with consistent, accessible UI while maintaining quality and developer experience.

This position is available in Denmark, Portugal, or the UK with hybrid and remote working options.

Responsibilities

You will be a force multiplier for product delivery and UI quality across the organization:

• Set technical direction for the design system, including component architecture, standards, release practices, and quality benchmarks
• Drive and evolve the contribution model—how teams interact with and extend the design system
• Own the intake process for requests: triage, prioritization, and stakeholder expectation-setting
• Improve developer and contributor experience through tooling and automation, including visual testing workflows, operational tooling, adoption metrics, and documentation publishing
• Lead rituals that keep the team effective and aligned across disciplines
• Represent design systems in cross-team initiatives and align stakeholders across design and engineering functions
• Coach and mentor engineers; help grow technical leadership in the frontend community
• Contribute hands-on in code—this role blends strategy and execution, with meaningful coding time expected

What We're Looking For

Required experience:

• Building and maintaining component libraries or platform-like products that serve multiple teams
• TypeScript and modern frontend engineering (React experience is a plus)
• Designing maintainable systems with clear boundaries, versioning, and backwards compatibility
• Testing practices and tooling (unit, integration, end-to-end) with a strong quality mindset
• Accessibility and performance best practices for UI systems
• Collaboration with designers and product engineers; navigating tradeoffs across stakeholders
