Software Engineer, Autonomy

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential aerospace technology organization at the forefront of autonomous systems and unmanned aircraft development. Our client is building next-generation swarming capabilities and command & control software to coordinate large-scale autonomous operations.

We're seeking a Software Engineer, Autonomy to own the architectural direction of their autonomy stack and lead its deployment onto production aircraft platforms. This is a high-impact technical role where you'll define the perception, planning, and control systems running onboard distributed autonomous vehicles, and set the engineering standard for a growing robotics team.

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve the autonomy software stack, extending robotic foundations with agentic AI for onboard reasoning, adaptation, and distributed coordination at scale
• Harden and extend inter-vehicle and command & control communication protocols for tactical decision making on the edge, including under degraded and contested communications environments
• Make and defend critical technical tradeoffs as the system scales: onboard vs. offboard compute, centralized vs. distributed decision making, determinism vs. adaptability
• Take autonomy capabilities from integration and test through to fielded operations, closing the feedback loop from test data back into the stack
• Mentor and technically guide a growing team of robotics engineers
• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code while establishing engineering best practices
• Travel up to 25% for onsite test and integration events

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or related technical field
• 5+ years building and deploying autonomy software at a major aerospace company or autonomous vehicle program
• Track record of owning architecture for a shipped autonomous system, not just contributing components
• Deep expertise in at least one systems language (C/C++, Rust, or Go)
• Proven experience deploying and validating advanced autonomy systems, including vision-language-action models, learned world models, trajectory optimization, sensor fusion, and multi-agent coordination
• Excellent software engineering practices with emphasis on testable, reliable code
• Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) due to ITAR requirements

Preferred:

• Experience with multi-agent or swarm systems
• Experience with robotics middleware (DDS/ROS2, ZeroMQ, gRPC) and serialization formats (Protobuf)
• Familiarity with government unmanned systems interoperability standards (OMS/UCI, STANAG 4586, FACE)
• Prior tech lead, staff engineer, or architect responsibility on an autonomy team

Pay

Our client offers competitive compensation including base salary ($170K–$250K based on experience), meaningful equity, comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401k), PTO and paid sick leave, monthly wellness stipend, paid parental leave, and the opportunity for direct impact on critical national security missions.
