About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential robotics simulation organization based in Paris that is building next-generation physical AI infrastructure. Our client maintains a leading open-source simulation platform used for robot learning and evaluation, combining multi-physics engines, real-time rendering, and comprehensive sensor simulation—all accessible through a Python-first interface that deploys across CPU and GPU backends.

As a Core Simulation Engine Engineer, you will serve as a maintainer of their flagship platform from day one, focusing on the developer experience layer that sits around cutting-edge physics algorithms. While the research team advances the physics, you ensure the platform is reliable, debuggable, and frictionless to use—both internally and for the global open-source community.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the software engineering backbone of a large-scale JIT-compiled simulation codebase
  • Design and implement systems for reproducible debugging: simulation state serialization, automatic script generation from failing runs, and bit-exact replay across machines and backends
  • Scale testing infrastructure for a multi-backend engine where compile time can exceed runtime by 10x
  • Drive autodiff integration from requirements definition through tight collaboration with the compiler team
  • Create interactive scene authoring tools that eliminate build-and-compile cycles during layout iteration
  • Design plugin architectures for physics solvers, rendering backends, and sensor systems
  • Implement motor actuation models and MIMO transmission abstractions
  • Refactor legacy subsystems with stronger typing, consistent coding standards, and reduced Python overhead on critical paths
  • Review community issues and pull requests, answer user questions, and support external contributors

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Professional experience with Python engineering on large codebases: architecture design, refactoring, static typing, packaging, and performance profiling tools (py-spy, Nsight, Xcode Instruments, RenderDoc)
  • Background in developer tooling, test infrastructure, or CI systems at scale
  • Working knowledge of physics and robotics concepts sufficient to inform API and architecture decisions
  • Fluency with JIT compilation, code generation, or GPU computing stacks—enough to reason about compilation caching, kernel dispatch, and startup costs
  • Cross-platform debugging skills across Windows, Linux, macOS, x86, ARM64, and GPU backends (CUDA, AMD ROCm, Apple Metal)
  • Open-source workflow experience: issue triage, external PR review, community communication
  • Strong opinions about API design and user-facing developer experience

Bonus:

  • Experience with robotics simulators or physics engines
  • PyTorch internals knowledge
  • Familiarity with JIT compilers (Triton, JAX, Numba)
  • 3D authoring tools experience (Maya, Blender, Houdini)
  • Knowledge of serialization formats (USD, glTF, MJCF, URDF)
  • C++, CUDA, or Metal programming
  • Developer relations or community management background
