Senior Backend Engineer – Databases – Analytics | UK | Remote

Responsibilities

Our talent team is representing a confidential observability technology organization seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build the core database layer for a new AI-native data intelligence platform. This is a ground-floor opportunity on a high-autonomy skunkworks team that operates with significant ownership and decision-making authority.

You will:

• Design, implement, test, and operate critical database components including ingestion pipelines, query planning, distributed query execution, and storage formats
• Build a scalable multi-tenant SaaS database architecture with tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logging, and background job processing
• Create APIs and database interfaces that enable AI agents, CLI tools, and internal applications to retrieve data efficiently
• Balance fast experimentation with long-term reliability as the project evolves from prototype to production
• Instrument services with comprehensive observability including metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards
• Shape technical direction including architecture, service boundaries, storage choices, API contracts, and deployment patterns
• Communicate effectively across a highly collaborative remote-first environment
• Take full ownership of solutions ensuring they are innovative, scalable, and maintainable

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Strong production-grade software engineering experience building user-facing systems
• Self-starter capable of solving complex problems and making design decisions independently
• Familiarity with AI technologies and frameworks, with focus on practical real-world solutions
• Comfort with rapid iteration, prototyping, and collecting user feedback
• Proven initiative in driving projects forward through ambiguity and loosely defined scope
• Experience with distributed systems, data catalogs, table formats, and query engines
• Mastery of programming languages such as Golang, C++, or Rust
• Track record delivering software actively used in production
• Experience working in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Experience using observability tools for system troubleshooting
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with a solutions-oriented mindset

Bonus experience:

• Building distributed query engines
• Building data warehouses or data lakes
• Building tools for data engineering workflows
