Research Scientist Intern (PhD)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI research organization at the forefront of foundation models for structured data. Our client is tackling challenges in tabular AI that remain unsolved by the broader machine learning community, with models deployed in production across healthcare, industrial, and enterprise applications.

This Research Scientist Internship is designed for PhD candidates who want hands-on experience building novel model architectures and pushing the boundaries of what's possible with structured data. You'll work directly on open research problems alongside a team with backgrounds from leading tech companies and research institutions.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to research on transformer architectures that scale to millions of samples while maintaining inference performance
• Explore multimodal models combining natural language and tabular understanding
• Develop specialized architectures for time series forecasting and anomaly detection
• Design efficient inference methods suitable for production deployment
• Research causal understanding and reasoning in foundation models
• Investigate novel approaches for handling relational and multi-table datasets
• Collaborate with research and engineering teams to bridge theory and implementation

What We're Looking For

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a PhD in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, or a related quantitative field (exceptional Master's students may be considered)
• Deep hands-on experience with PyTorch and scikit-learn
• Strong software engineering fundamentals with expert-level Python proficiency
• Prior work with tabular data, time series, or structured data applications
• Track record of publications at top-tier ML conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR) or significant contributions to open-source ML projects
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment
• Strong communication skills for presenting research findings

Location: Berlin, Germany. Our client values in-person collaboration for research roles. Remote arrangements may be considered in exceptional cases with frequent travel requirements.
