AI Research Engineer (f/m/d)

We are representing a confidential software analysis organization in their search for an AI Research Engineer to join their Data & AI team in Bochum, Germany. Our client is pioneering the application of cutting-edge machine learning and Large Language Model techniques to transform how code quality and security challenges are addressed at scale. Responsibilities

• Lead research initiatives exploring ML, Deep Learning, and LLM applications within the Software Development Lifecycle, identifying opportunities to enhance product capabilities
• Design, prototype, and validate novel machine learning models that detect complex bugs, vulnerabilities, and code quality issues beyond traditional analysis methods
• Develop and implement advanced LLM-based solutions, including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) for contextual code analysis, model fine-tuning on specialized codebases, and agentic systems for automated remediation
• Build and manage robust data pipelines to gather, process, and version large-scale code-centric datasets for training and evaluation
• Collaborate with engineering and product teams to integrate successful ML prototypes into production systems
• Document and communicate complex technical concepts and research findings to diverse stakeholders

What We're Looking For

• Advanced academic background (Master's or PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field
• Strong industry experience in machine learning with solid understanding of modern software engineering practices
• Excellent programming skills in Python and hands-on experience with ML/DL frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Hugging Face; familiarity with Java is advantageous
• Proven experience in applied Machine Learning with strong focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Programming Language Processing (PLP)
• Hands-on experience with modern LLM architectures and techniques: fine-tuning strategies (LoRA, QLoRA), advanced prompt engineering, RAG pipeline optimization, vector databases, and semantic search
• Experience with large-scale data processing frameworks and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS)
• Track record of driving research projects from ideation to demonstrable prototype with high autonomy
• Excellent English communication skills with ability to explain complex scientific topics clearly and concisely
