Senior Security Engineer, Detection and Response

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology platform client seeking a Senior Security Engineer, Detection and Response to establish their Security Operations capability in the EMEA region. Based in London, you will be a founding member of a growing security team, working from a dedicated secure space within a shared office environment.

This is a highly autonomous role where you will serve as the primary security engineering decision-maker during European hours, designing detection systems, building automation, and commanding incident response before colleagues in other time zones come online. You will work closely with peers across the Atlantic while maintaining the independence to make critical security decisions in real-time.

Responsibilities

• Design, write, and maintain production-quality detections, automations, and integrations including detections-as-code, SOAR playbooks, and data enrichment pipelines that enable scalable monitoring
• Develop and improve tooling for alert quality, case-management integrations, and automation that powers reliable follow-the-sun handoffs across global security operations
• Serve as primary Incident Commander for the European time zone, making critical, time-sensitive decisions independently and acting as the senior-most security engineering contact in the region
• Shape technical direction and architecture for detection and response engineering, specifically optimizing global handoffs and follow-the-sun operational models
• Lead end-to-end security incident responses during local hours, ensuring threats are understood, mitigated, and learned from, then converting insights into durable automated detections
• Conduct forensic investigations and proactive threat hunting, analyzing complex context to distinguish genuine threats from outliers in security signals
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Legal, HR, Executive teams, and external partners, and travel semi-regularly to headquarters for alignment with central engineering and security leadership
• Lead responses to major vulnerabilities or platform-wide security events in partnership with Security and Engineering teams

What We're Looking For

• 10+ years of experience across security engineering, information security, IT, infrastructure/SRE, and/or incident response
• 7+ years specifically in Detection or Response, with demonstrated experience building detections, automation, or security tooling—not solely operating existing systems
• Production-quality coding skills with ability to write and review scripts, automations, integrations, and data pipelines that others depend on
• Proven autonomous leadership ability, comfortable working independently in satellite offices or distributed teams and making business-impacting decisions
• Extensive incident command experience with ability to flex between deep engineering work and executive-level communication with leadership
• Expert-level investigation capability in enterprise and production environments, taking ownership from threat identification to resolution
• Deep understanding of security tooling (SIEM, EDR, IDS/IPS, NDR, SOAR) with experience extending or building upon it
• Proficiency applying incident response frameworks (NIST IR Lifecycle, Cyber Kill Chain, MITRE ATT&CK) to real-world scenarios
• Extensive expertise across infrastructure and technologies including public cloud, operating systems, virtualization, containerization, networking, and build/development infrastructure
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or related technical field; advanced degree preferred or equivalent experience
• Strategic self-starter who identifies and fixes coverage gaps, particularly those unique to regional or time-zone challenges
• Builder-operator mindset who prefers to automate problems rather than staff around them, maintaining engineering standards even under incident pressure
