Fusion Island Group Leader (f/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential deep-tech organization in the advanced energy sector, seeking a highly experienced engineering leader to oversee the integrated design of complex fusion power systems. This role offers end-to-end accountability for critical nuclear engineering deliverables from concept through commissioning. You'll lead a multidisciplinary team in Darmstadt, Germany, working on cutting-edge reactor technology that addresses global energy challenges.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical and organizational leadership for the complete fusion island design, maintaining accountability from early concept development through detailed design, licensing, and handover to construction
• Define and govern overall systems design architecture, including plant configuration, major design parameters, and fundamental safety approach
• Lead critical design reviews, independent assessments, and design verification activities across all engineering disciplines
• Resolve complex, cross-cutting technical issues that span multiple engineering domains
• Approve key engineering deliverables including system design descriptions, design basis documents, interface control documents, and safety analysis inputs
• Lead, manage, and develop a multidisciplinary technical team, defining roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations
• Report design status, risks, and issues to senior leadership with clarity and regularity
• Manage design change control processes to maintain schedule and cost discipline while preserving design integrity

What We're Looking For

• Degree in engineering; M.Sc. or Ph.D. in nuclear engineering strongly preferred
• Minimum 10 years of engineering experience with at least 5 years leading multidisciplinary technical teams
• Deep knowledge of nuclear plant systems, safety analysis principles, and design basis development
• Strong foundation in nuclear reactor physics; fusion experience is advantageous
• Mastery of nuclear plant systems including thermal-hydraulics, neutronics, mechanical analyses, instrumentation and control, and activation
• Demonstrated experience with requirements management, configuration management, nuclear safety, RAMI, licensing, documentation control, and project scheduling
• Strong command of applicable codes and standards
• Experience managing large engineering programs, including scope, schedule, budget, and risk
• Experience with advanced reactor designs or fusion-specific systems is a plus
• Fluency in English; German language skills beneficial for this Darmstadt-based position
