About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential IoT technology company based in Munich. They're seeking a Senior Embedded Linux Engineer to own the operating system foundation and platform layer of their edge devices.

This role sits at the intersection of low-level embedded systems and application development. You'll build and evolve a Yocto-based Linux distribution for ARM devices while developing the Python application layer that delivers product features. The work spans from kernel and driver integration in C/C++ through system-level debugging to writing Python software that transforms hardware capabilities into reliable, production-ready functionality.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain a Yocto-based Linux distribution for ARM-powered IoT devices with constrained compute resources
• Develop Python-based application software that runs within a containerized environment and leverages underlying hardware capabilities
• Implement and maintain security, inter-process communication, networking, scheduling, and observability at the OS level
• Design and implement over-the-air (OTA) update systems for both OS and application layers
• Integrate peripherals including watchdog timers, modems, and AI accelerators, ensuring robust observability
• Bridge the system layer and application layer using Python and Bash scripting
• Debug complex system-level issues including memory leaks, networking failures, and kernel-level problems
• Take end-to-end ownership of solutions and proactively improve platform architecture

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Several years of hands-on experience developing embedded Linux systems
• Strong understanding of Linux internals, GNU toolchain, and Bash scripting
• Proven experience building and customizing Linux images using Yocto
• Proficiency in at least one systems programming language (C, C++, Rust, Go, or Java)
• Experience with Python development or strong motivation to use Python as a primary language
• Demonstrated skill with debugging tools: GDB, tcpdump, Valgrind, UART, JTAG
• Solid knowledge of Linux internals including bootloaders, systemd, drivers, kernel concepts, networking, and Docker
• Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent practical experience
• Fluent English (C1 level)
• Ability to pass a live coding interview

Preferred:

• Experience operating large-scale IoT device fleets
• Knowledge of industrial hardware, cameras, AI accelerators, modems, or network devices
• Experience with computer vision, edge AI, or machine learning
• Familiarity with MQTT and Protocol Buffers
