Software Engineer, Backend (BI Platform)

Responsibilities

We are representing a global technology organization in their search for a Software Engineer, Backend (BI Platform) based in London with a hybrid work arrangement (typically 3 days in office).

In this role, you will build and operate the backend services, APIs, and infrastructure that power business intelligence platforms serving analysts, data scientists, engineers, and business teams across a multi-brand operation. This is a hands-on platform engineering position focused on:

• Designing, building, testing, deploying, and operating backend services and APIs that BI platforms depend on
• Automating platform lifecycle management end-to-end, including provisioning, metadata handling, permissions, migrations, archival, and validation
• Building integrations between BI platforms and the wider ecosystem: data warehouses, identity providers, orchestration systems, CI/CD pipelines, and internal developer tooling
• Improving availability, observability, performance, scalability, and security of systems you own, with full production ownership
• Leveraging AI tooling as part of your engineering workflow and, where appropriate, building LLM-backed capabilities held to the same reliability and governance standards as all production systems
• Raising the engineering bar through service design, code review, testing, CI/CD, documentation, and improving developer experience for everyone building on the platform

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production backend, platform, or infrastructure systems
• Strong Python skills with readable, maintainable, well-tested code, plus comfort with SQL and working understanding of data modeling and warehousing concepts
• Experience building and owning APIs, integrations, or automation in production, with sound judgment on service boundaries, authentication, data contracts, and failure modes
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD, containers and Kubernetes, observability, debugging, and incident response
• Practical experience using AI tools (LLMs, agentic workflows, AI-assisted development) as part of your engineering process, with judgment about where they help and where they do not
• End-to-end ownership of ambiguous problems, clear communication with technical and non-technical teams, and comfort self-organizing in a fast-paced, distributed environment

Nice to have:

• Experience owning or integrating with BI platforms such as Looker, Sigma, or comparable tools, and familiarity with semantic layers such as LookML or dbt
• Experience automating identity and access through Okta, SCIM, or role-based access controls, or building multi-tenant platforms across brands and regions
• Experience shipping LLM-backed features to real users (retrieval, grounding, and evaluation), or with MCP, agent frameworks, or tool-calling in production
