About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential robotics organization at a pivotal moment in their growth. Our client is transitioning advanced robotic manipulation technology from prototype to production-ready industrial product. This is not a research project—they have customers ready to deploy, and the engineering decisions you make will directly shape what ships.
As Chief Technology Officer, you will own the complete technology strategy, product architecture, and engineering execution across hardware and software. You will lead multidisciplinary teams spanning project management, systems engineering, mechanics, electronics, sensors, embedded systems, robotics software, AI, product management, and testing. Your mission is to transform a highly capable prototype into a reliable, manufacturable, and scalable industrial product.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute the technology strategy and product roadmap from current platform to scalable industrial product
- Lead engineering organization across project management, systems, mechanics, electronics, sensors, embedded and robotics software, AI, product, applications and testing
- Own system architecture and interfaces between hardware, software, AI and applications
- Drive transition from advanced prototypes to reliable, manufacturable, serviceable customer-ready products
- Balance performance, reliability, cost, safety, manufacturability and execution speed in technical trade-offs
- Recruit, develop and lead engineering and product teams across two locations
- Establish priorities, processes, decision-making structures and technical standards
- Manage engineering budgets, headcount and priorities aligned with business goals
- Translate customer requirements and field experience into product decisions and technology direction
- Represent the organization externally with customers, partners, investors and the robotics community
- Remain hands-on enough to challenge critical technical decisions and unblock teams when necessary
What We're Looking For
- Deep practical understanding of both hardware and software development with credibility to guide experts across mechanics, electronics, sensors, embedded systems, controls, AI and applications
- Proven track record leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, ideally with responsibility for 20+ people, multiple functions and significant budget
- Experience shipping complex robotics, mechatronics, medical or industrial hardware from development/prototype stage into customer use or production
- Strong systems thinking—ability to connect mechanics, electronics, sensing, control, software, AI and customer applications into coherent product architecture
- Track record recruiting strong talent, developing leaders and creating culture of ownership and high standards
- Experience scaling engineering in startup, scale-up or industrial technology environment
- Pragmatic decision-making under uncertainty with commercial awareness
- Ability to communicate credibly with engineers, customers, executives, investors and industrial partners
- Degree in engineering, computer science, robotics, mechatronics or related field preferred
- Fluent English required; German is an advantage
- Comfortable working across two locations (Zurich and Munich)
Highly valued experience:
- Humanoid or biomedical robotics, particularly anthropomorphic mechanisms, sensor/actuator systems, or tendon-driven devices
- Dexterous manipulation or grasp planning
- Tactile sensing and contact-rich manipulation
