About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential robotics client in Munich that is developing advanced manipulation technology for industrial applications. This is a hands-on mechanical engineering role where you'll design the complete mechanical systems for highly integrated robotic end-effectors—from kinematics and drive trains to production-ready assemblies.
You'll work at the intersection of precision mechanism design, materials engineering, and manufacturability, solving real constraints in a human-scale envelope. This isn't theoretical research; your designs will go directly into products being deployed with customers.
Responsibilities
- Design components, mechanisms and complete assemblies in CAD, owning designs from concept through production release
- Develop finger and thumb kinematics, tendon and spindle drives, joints and bearing systems
- Calculate motion envelopes, trajectories, gripping forces and transmission ratios
- Validate designs through FEA, structural and fatigue calculations, tolerance stack-ups and GD&T
- Select and qualify materials for lightweight structures, wear surfaces, tendons and compliant gripping elements
- Design for efficient assembly, serviceability, and multiple manufacturing processes (machining, injection moulding, sheet metal, additive)
- Build prototypes, design test rigs, run endurance testing and perform root-cause failure analysis
- Create technical drawings, BOMs and manage design changes through development reviews
- Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners from prototype through production ramp-up
- Work cross-functionally with electronics, sensors and software teams to integrate complete systems
What We're Looking For
- Degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, precision engineering or comparable qualification
- 5–10 years of experience in mechanical design of precision mechatronic products, with at least one product taken to series production
- Advanced 3D CAD skills (CATIA, NX, SolidWorks, Creo or similar) and confident 2D drawing creation with GD&T
- Strong understanding of mechanism design: linkages, gear trains, bearings, power transmission, backlash and stiffness
- Proven experience with FEA, structural and fatigue analysis, and tolerance calculations in design workflows
- Strong knowledge of material selection for lightweight, high-load and wear-critical applications
- Practical DFM/DFA experience across multiple manufacturing processes
- Hands-on mentality—comfortable building prototypes, running tests and analyzing failures directly
- Fluent in English and German
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience with robotic grippers, prosthetics or highly integrated precision mechanisms
- Experience with compact drive trains: planetary, harmonic or cycloidal gearing, spindle drives, actuator integration
- Experience with elastomers, soft goods, injection moulding of complex geometries or compliant structures
- Experience integrating tactile or force sensors into mechanical assemblies
- Familiarity with multi-body simulation or topology optimization
- Knowledge of Machinery Regulation, ISO/TS 15066 or mechanical design for collaborative applications
