Backend Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential defense technology organization building modern software solutions for critical national infrastructure. Our talent team is seeking a Backend Engineer to join a platform development effort focused on ground communications and data-transport systems. You'll lead core service development, design scalable technology, and mentor junior engineers while working both as an individual contributor and technical lead.

Responsibilities

• Design and build core backend services for a multi-tenant cloud platform supporting government operations
• Architect and develop APIs and microservices within a distributed platform ecosystem
• Lead technical implementation while mentoring less experienced team members
• Own technical problems end-to-end, from design through deployment and maintenance
• Emphasize automation, security, and scalability in all development work
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver mission-critical capabilities
• Self-direct learning of new technologies and apply them to complex challenges

What We're Looking For

• 3-5+ years of progressively responsible software engineering experience
• Extensive hands-on experience with Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform
• Proven track record architecting and building backend services and RESTful APIs
• Deep knowledge of at least one commercial cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and associated services
• Experience developing multi-tenant services on public cloud infrastructure
• Strong understanding of automation, CI/CD, and security best practices
• Comfort working with ambiguity and ability to self-manage technical work
• Clear communication skills and collaborative team approach
• Track record of learning from both successes and failures to inform architectural decisions
• Nice to have: prior experience with satellite communications, space systems, or ground station infrastructure

Security Clearance Requirement: This position requires eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance. Due to export control regulations, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident (green card holder), refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations under ITAR.

Location: Remote within the United States. Some travel may be required for client visits and team gatherings.
