Senior Python Engineer, Platform Libraries (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential life sciences technology organization in München that is building critical infrastructure for laboratory automation. Our talent team is searching for a Senior Python Engineer to own and evolve the platform libraries that power hardware connectivity and instrument integration.

This is a hands-on technical role with dual focus: you'll build and maintain shared Python libraries used by internal engineering teams, while also shipping production connectors against real laboratory instruments. You'll work directly with physical devices in a Munich workshop, reverse-engineering protocols, debugging hardware interfaces, and extracting abstractions that make future integration work faster.

The position requires someone who has designed APIs for other developers, debugged real protocols against physical hardware, and can ship independently from incomplete specifications. You'll define quality standards, make technical decisions about the connector engineering stack, and eventually enable external contributors through excellent documentation and tooling.

Responsibilities

• Own and maintain core Python libraries including Bus, the Connector Development Kit, and underlying infrastructure used across all connector implementations
• Ship production-ready connectors end-to-end: from specification through physical device integration, protocol implementation, testing, and customer deployment
• Reverse-engineer instrument protocols when vendor documentation is incomplete or incorrect, using packet captures and systematic experimentation
• Extract reusable patterns from connector work and promote them into library features, balancing abstraction with practical needs
• Define and enforce testing standards, CI/CD processes, and release management across the connector ecosystem
• Collaborate with the workshop team on instrument preparation and work directly with automation engineers and scientists at customer sites
• Create documentation that enables other engineers to build connectors independently without requiring direct support
• Engage with open source standardization efforts and external contributors as the platform evolves

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 5+ years production Python experience, with demonstrated expertise in async, typing, packaging, and testing patterns
• Experience designing APIs and libraries that other developers build upon, not just application-level code
• Hands-on debugging experience with hardware protocols such as gRPC, serial, TCP, OPC UA, CAN, or USB
• Proven ability to reverse-engineer systems and ship working solutions when documentation is inadequate
• Track record building developer tools, SDKs, internal platforms, or other infrastructure that improves engineering velocity
• Located in or willing to relocate to München, with regular on-site presence required for hardware work

Valued but not required:

• Experience with SiLA 2 or similar device abstraction and interoperability standards
• Background in laboratory automation, scientific instrumentation, or life sciences
• Open source maintainership with external contributor management
• Proficiency in C, C++,.NET, or Rust for working with vendor SDKs and drivers
• Docker, Kubernetes, or edge deployment experience
• German language skills for vendor communication

Likely not a fit if:

• Your Python experience is primarily web APIs and databases without hardware integration
• You prefer extensive upfront design over iterative shipping and refinement
• You enjoy integration work but lack interest in subsequent generalization, testing, and documentation
• You want pure library development without customer-facing connector deadlines
