What This Role Involves
As a Utility Locator, you'll play a critical role in damage prevention by identifying and marking underground utilities before excavation and construction work begins. This hands-on position requires attention to detail, physical capability, and a commitment to safety—your work directly prevents costly service interruptions and protects the public.
Your Responsibilities
- Locate and mark underground electrical, gas, water, telecommunications, and other utility lines using specialized marking equipment
- Respond to utility location requests from construction sites, contractors, and utility companies within service areas around Shreveport
- Maintain accurate records of locate requests, marked locations, and findings in compliance with industry regulations
- Operate hand-held locating equipment and other diagnostic tools to trace utility positions with precision
- Communicate clearly with site supervisors and contractors about identified utilities and safety protocols
- Follow all OSHA and industry safety standards, including proper personal protective equipment use
- Perform routine equipment maintenance and report any malfunctions to supervisors
Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and walk extended distances
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in marking locations
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Willingness to obtain and maintain Utility Locator certification, with training provided or preferred
- Knowledge of local utility systems and damage prevention best practices is a plus
