Senior Platform Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential European fintech organization operating in the billing infrastructure and payments space. Our client is a small, engineering-led team building foundational systems that sit in the critical path of global payments and financial workflows—where reliability, uptime, and correctness are paramount.

We're seeking a Senior Platform Engineer who will architect and evolve distributed systems at scale while maintaining high velocity. This role focuses on the platform, infrastructure, and observability layers that power customer-facing billing and payment operations.

Responsibilities

• Ensure platform reliability and uptime: Design and evolve systems that maintain high availability, predictable performance, and operational stability as the system scales
• Engineer for scale and performance: Strengthen distributed services behavior under load, identify bottlenecks, optimize critical paths, and design systems that scale with growing traffic and complexity
• Advance SRE and DevOps practices: Embed reliability engineering practices across the platform—define SLOs and SLIs, improve incident response, reduce operational toil, and make production behavior measurable and actionable
• Evolve cloud and infrastructure systems: Continuously improve infrastructure-as-code, environment management, and operational safety mechanisms while determining when the current stack needs to evolve
• Strengthen deployment and operational safety: Refine CI/CD systems, rollout strategies, and rollback mechanisms to ensure changes are safe, observable, reversible, and fast to deploy
• Improve observability and debuggability: Advance logging, metrics, and tracing standards so engineers can quickly understand, debug, and resolve production issues
• Collaborate across functions: Work with product engineers and risk/legal stakeholders to translate regulatory requirements into clear technical abstractions while maintaining long-term platform health

What We're Looking For

Systems Thinking and Operating Mindset:

• Deep systems thinking—you anticipate failure modes, design for idempotency and consistency, and understand how distributed systems behave in production
• Security- and compliance-aware engineering mindset with auditability, access control, and regulatory constraints as first-order design considerations
• End-to-end ownership—comfortable owning features from infrastructure and backend through to product functionality when needed
• Strong product judgment balanced with correctness, auditability, and long-term system integrity
• High-ownership collaboration style, thriving in small teams with shared responsibility for platform architecture

Technical Skills:

• Strong backend expertise designing clear, durable APIs and building resilient systems under real-world load and edge cases
• Highly proficient in SQL and data modeling with rigorous reasoning about long-term data correctness, performance, and reliability
• Strong production debugging and observability instincts with ability to trace complex issues across services
• Experience building or operating distributed systems with strong reliability and operational requirements

Experience:

• 5-8+ years of engineering experience building and scaling customer-facing SaaS or fintech products in high-growth environments
• Experience in payments and billing infrastructure—subscription lifecycles, transaction orchestration, refunds/disputes, payouts, and financial state management
• Nice-to-have: Open source contributions or side projects to showcase
