Staff Backend Engineer (.NET) (f/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential hospitality technology organization in their search for a Staff Backend Engineer to join their Platform team. This is a high-impact individual contributor role working in close partnership with senior technical leadership to drive infrastructure, developer experience, and security foundations across the engineering organization.

This position offers exceptional autonomy and ownership. You'll tackle large, ambiguous, cross-cutting initiatives from initial analysis through completion. Location: Remote within Europe (hybrid options available for those near Munich, Germany)

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend systems that support the entire engineering organization
• Self-identify and scope problems and initiatives independently, assessing impact, prioritization, and timing without waiting for direction
• Lead architectural decisions and design discussions with cross-team alignment
• Drive large, ambiguous, cross-cutting initiatives end to end, coordinating with multiple stakeholders
• Mentor engineers and champion technical excellence across teams
• Build and maintain internal tools and infrastructure (AWS, Terraform) that enable teams to deliver faster and more reliably
• Own observability, logging, and operational excellence to maintain platform availability
• Participate in on-call rotations and serve as a reliable problem solver during incidents
• Proactively identify opportunities where AI and automation can drive technical improvement

Sample challenges you might tackle:

• Solving horizontal write-scaling for databases
• Modernizing CI/CD pipelines for faster, more reliable delivery
• Migrating infrastructure-as-code from CloudFormation to Terraform
• Extracting and reworking common services to support next-level scale

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 8+ years of backend development experience, including several years in a staff-level or technical leadership role
• Strong engineering fundamentals that transfer across languages and cloud platforms
• Proven track record of owning large technical initiatives from ambiguity through completion, ideally on platform or infrastructure teams
• Experience designing and scaling distributed systems in cloud-native environments (AWS preferred; strong Azure fundamentals with genuine enthusiasm for the switch also valued)
• Comfortable working with containerized services and infrastructure-as-code (Docker, Terraform)
• Confidence writing your own unit and integration tests (no dedicated QA function)
• Fluent English

Preferred qualifications:

• Direct experience with C# (.NET), PostgreSQL, AWS, and ECS/Kubernetes
• Experience setting up infrastructure-as-code from scratch, ideally with Terraform, including migrations from other IaC approaches
• Experience with Kafka or other event-driven and streaming systems (Azure Service Bus experience transfers well)
• Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI, ChatGPT, Amazon CodeWhisperer) and genuine interest in AI-driven engineering improvement
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills, particularly for introducing new technology to other teams
