Senior Production Engineer

About This Role

We are representing a confidential technology client in Reading, Berkshire, who is seeking a Senior Production Engineer to lead their on-site manufacturing operations. This is a hands-on leadership position combining deep technical expertise in robotics and electronics with day-to-day management of an assembly, test, and calibration team.

You will own the entire build, test, and calibration process for complex AR hardware devices, driving the transition from prototype manufacturing to scalable volume production. This role reports to senior leadership and sits at the intersection of engineering excellence and production delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the assembly, test, and calibration team—allocating work, building capability through skills matrices and cross-training, and mentoring engineers
• Own robot calibration and configuration processes; maintain production test systems including test rigs, acceptance criteria, measurement capability, and calibration control
• Establish and optimize build-and-test cycle times; design and improve manufacturing processes to drive cycle time reduction, first-time-right yield, and labor efficiency
• Lead new product introduction (NPI) activities: first-article builds, process validation, jigs and fixtures design, and automation implementation
• Drive root-cause analysis on returns and field failures; implement corrective actions under ISO 9001 clause 10.2 and establish in-process quality gates
• Create and control assembly, test, and calibration work instructions under the quality management system; support engineering change implementation in production

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Degree or equivalent in electrical, electronic, mechatronic, or manufacturing engineering
• Substantial hands-on electrical and electronic engineering experience with complex products—comfortable with schematics, harnesses, PCB-level fault-finding, and measurement instrumentation
• Demonstrable robotics experience: programming, calibration, configuration, and integration into production or test environments
• Experience leading a small technical team with evidence of developing people through coaching and mentoring

Key experience and skills:

• Track record scaling low-volume, high-complexity manufacturing—process design, yield improvement, and automation
• Experience transitioning products from prototype to repeatable production
• Comfortable with command-line tools, firmware installation, and test scripting
• Experience working to ISO 9001 standards, including NCR and corrective action processes
• Confident user of ERP and inventory management systems
• A hands-on leader who sets the standard personally and holds the team accountable
