About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential defense technology client seeking a Flight Test Engineer & Onsite Test Coordinator in Berlin. Our client develops advanced autonomous systems for highly contested environments, supporting NATO Allies and their partners.
In this role, you will serve as the "Conductor of the Flight Line," responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of flight test campaigns. You will act as the primary onsite leader, coordinating daily operations, managing test priorities, and transforming raw flight data into actionable insights while maintaining a disciplined and safe testing environment.
Responsibilities
- Onsite Test Coordination & Leadership: Lead daily operations on the range as the Onsite Test Coordinator, ensuring the team stays focused on primary test objectives and maintaining clear communication of the daily flight schedule.
- Briefings & Communication: Drive morning pre-flight briefs and evening debriefs, capturing critical feedback and setting goals for subsequent test days.
- Resource Management: Coordinate availability of airframes, ground support equipment, and personnel to maximize range time efficiency.
- Flight Execution & Safety: Coordinate and execute UAV flight tests in compliance with regulatory requirements and safety standards, ensuring all flight activities and anomalies are documented with high fidelity.
- Flight Readiness: Lead Flight Readiness Reviews (FRR) and contribute to safety review boards, developing specific Flight Test Techniques (FTTs) and instrumentation requirements.
- Test Design & Data Analysis: Develop comprehensive flight test plans, test cards, and flight test hazard assessments (FTHA). Process and analyze flight data using MATLAB or Python to validate system performance.
- Configuration Management: Manage the configuration of flight test articles, ensuring all hardware and software versions are meticulously tracked.
- Flight Control Systems: Work closely with Ardupilot and PX4-based flight control systems to iterate on flight behavior and performance.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering
- Citizenship of a NATO member state (required due to export control and security regulations)
- Professional-level written and verbal English
- Proven ability to lead technical teams on-site, manage schedules, and communicate priorities clearly under pressure
- Practical experience in data reduction and analysis using MATLAB or Python
- Familiarity with Ground Control Stations (GCS), telemetry systems, and mission planning tools
- Proven ability to plan and conduct system-level tests in an aerospace or defense environment
- Highly organized with ability to work through ambiguity in dynamic field conditions
- Analytical and decisive, capable of quickly assessing data anomalies and making testing decisions
- Meticulous documentation skills with commitment to high-fidelity record-keeping
Preferred Experience:
- Active experience with uncrewed aviation systems
- Hands-on experience with flight test instrumentation (FTI) and data acquisition (DAQ) systems
- Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environments
