Senior Machine Learning Manager, Borrowing

About This Opportunity

We are representing a leading UK fintech organization that is scaling its lending operations domestically and preparing for European expansion. Our client is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Manager to lead their Borrowing ML team in Cardiff (remote options available across the UK).

This is a rare opportunity to shape credit decisioning strategy at scale. You will oversee machine learning scientists working across underwriting, pricing, credit limits, and lifecycle decisioning for multiple lending products. The role combines immediate commercial impact with long-term strategic infrastructure building as the organization expands into new markets and customer segments.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of ML scientists focused on credit risk and lending applications
• Define and execute the ML roadmap for lending optimization, new customer segments, and international expansion
• Drive continuous improvement of underwriting models across multiple lending products
• Accelerate model development through enhanced data sources, feature engineering, and tooling
• Integrate transaction intelligence, open banking data, and external data into credit decisioning frameworks
• Build portable underwriting capabilities that scale across products, segments, and geographies
• Partner with Credit Strategy, Product, Engineering, Model Validation, Data, and Platform teams
• Establish best practices for model quality, governance, and iteration speed in a regulated environment
• Shape the organization's approach to advanced ML and AI in credit applications
• Recruit, mentor, and retain top ML talent

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience:

• Deep expertise in machine learning, statistics, and decisioning systems
• Significant experience in credit risk and lending, including building and deploying production credit models
• Track record of pushing innovation boundaries within the credit industry
• Proven leadership managing and developing senior ML scientists
• Strong cross-functional leadership skills working with Product, Strategy, Engineering, and Validation teams
• Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into practical delivery within regulated environments
• Experience with cloud platforms (GCP or AWS), SQL, Python and the PyData stack

Highly Valued:

• Multi-market credit experience
• Hands-on experience with advanced ML methods and AI applied to structured financial data
• Familiarity with model serving infrastructure and ML platforms

Technology Environment:

The team works with cloud platforms, BigQuery, Python, machine learning platforms, and modern AI productivity tools. While experience with the full stack is not required, comfort with data-intensive ML engineering is essential.
