Principal AI Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking a Principal AI Engineer to lead the design, development, and adoption of AI systems within strategic business domains. In this role, you will combine deep AI engineering expertise with product and business understanding to identify high-impact opportunities, define roadmaps, and deliver measurable outcomes.

As the AI technical lead for your domain, you will drive architecture decisions, engineering excellence, and AI adoption across teams and stakeholders. Your focus areas may include sales and marketing operations or finance and legal functions.

Key responsibilities include:

• Own Tech Strategy: Identify high-value opportunities with business leaders and define the technical vision and product roadmap for AI agents within your domain
• Lead AI System Development: Design and build production-grade AI systems, drive architecture decisions, and ensure scalability, reliability, and maintainability
• Drive Adoption and Business Impact: Work closely with end users, measure adoption and outcomes, and accelerate AI transformation across your domain
• Establish Technical Excellence: Promote best practices for evaluation, testing, guardrails, and observability; review designs and mentor engineers; raise the quality bar across initiatives
• Grow AI Capability: Mentor AI Engineers and Agent Builders, share knowledge and reusable components, and build AI expertise within the organization

This is a permanent position based in Bordeaux with 4 days on-site per week required.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 7+ years of experience in Software Engineering, ML Engineering, or Applied AI
• Strong hands-on experience with LLMs, RAG, AI Agents, evaluation frameworks, and production AI systems
• Proven ability to influence product and business decisions at a senior level
• Demonstrated leadership on complex cross-functional initiatives
• Proficiency in Python and SQL
• Experience with AI technologies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Mistral, and open-source models
• Familiarity with agentic and retrieval frameworks such as LangGraph, LangChain, LlamaIndex, MCP, and vector databases
• Infrastructure experience with AWS or GCP, Docker, and Kubernetes

Success in this role will be measured by business impact delivered through AI initiatives, domain-wide adoption rates, technical quality and reliability, and team capability growth.
