(Senior) Backend Engineer – idealo Intelligence (m|w|d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential e-commerce technology organization in their search for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a newly forming intelligence and data platform team. In this role, you will build the technical foundation for advanced data processing and analytics capabilities, working with modern cloud-native technologies and event-driven architectures from the ground up.

This position is available full-time or part-time and is based in Berlin, Germany.

Responsibilities

• Develop and operate backend services and data workflows for processing, anonymizing, and enriching large datasets
• Own the complete lifecycle of your services—from architecture and implementation through production operations
• Build Java and Spring Boot microservices using event-driven architectures and cloud-native technologies on AWS
• Ensure high software quality through automated testing, code reviews, and observability practices
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity and code quality
• Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams, sharing knowledge through pair programming, reviews, and documentation

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Several years of experience in backend or platform development with Java
• Experience with Spring Boot or comparable frameworks
• Hands-on experience with cloud-native applications and containerized deployments (AWS, Kubernetes, or Docker)
• Experience with event-driven architectures, such as Kafka
• Experience with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Redis
• Ability to respectfully challenge assumptions and use data and clear arguments to discuss ideas; once decisions are made, you commit fully to support team alignment and momentum
• Strong English communication skills

Preferred:

• Experience with data pipelines, PySpark, or Apache Airflow
• Experience operating production systems
• German language skills
