Data Scientist – AI Safety

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential AI research organization in their search for a Data Scientist focused on AI Safety. This London-based role sits at the critical intersection of data science, machine learning, and safety policy—translating complex safety requirements into practical datasets and evaluation systems that scale.

You'll take ownership of the datasets and evaluation workflows that underpin AI safety work, turning real-world product data into reliable, well-structured resources for training and evaluating models. This is a hands-on role where you'll build the processes and infrastructure to continuously assess model performance in production.

Responsibilities

• Own safety datasets end-to-end including collection, cleaning, labelling, quality control, versioning, and preparation for training and evaluation
• Translate safety policy into clear, consistent labelling and evaluation criteria in partnership with policy specialists
• Design and manage labelling processes, including sourcing, onboarding, and overseeing external contributors to maintain high quality standards
• Build evaluation workflows for production models using real-world data to track performance and surface issues
• Develop lightweight Python/SQL pipelines and tooling to make data work faster and reproducible
• Partner with ML engineers to define what "training-ready" datasets look like for safety applications

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Experience as a Data Scientist or similar role working with real-world datasets and ML models
• Strong understanding of dataset fundamentals: collection, cleaning, sampling, labelling, quality control, and evaluation
• Proficiency with Python and SQL for analysis and practical data workflows
• Strong critical thinking and judgement—comfortable with ambiguity and nuance, able to turn complex guidelines into consistent, scalable decisions
• Autonomous work style with clear communication skills across disciplines (policy, engineering, research)
• Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, still-forming environment

Bonus qualifications:

• Experience in AI safety, trust and safety, content moderation, or fraud/abuse detection
• Background building datasets or evaluation frameworks, particularly with adversarial or safety-focused ML
• Experience managing human-in-the-loop labelling processes, dataset versioning, or ML pipeline tooling
• Experience operationalizing guidelines with policy or legal teams
