About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential client in the autonomous systems sector, seeking a Technical Project Manager to drive delivery across a portfolio of complex hardware engineering projects. This is a hands-on role based in Calmsden, Cirencester, ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced, technically demanding environments and can bring structure to ambitious, multi-disciplinary development programs.
Our client is building advanced systems for extreme operational environments, working at the intersection of hardware, autonomy, and mission-critical deployments. You'll own project planning and execution across concurrent engineering streams, managing everything from early-stage prototypes through to fielded, production-ready platforms.
Responsibilities
- Own project planning and delivery tracking across multiple concurrent engineering work streams including firmware, electronics, mechanical design, and testing
- Translate strategic priorities into executable project plans with clear milestones, owners, and outcomes
- Convert ambitious commercial deadlines into realistic, resourced delivery schedules while maintaining both ambition and delivery discipline
- Maintain visibility across dependencies, risks, decisions, and resourcing gaps; manage technical risk mapping across products at different Technology Readiness Levels
- Take ownership of Bills of Materials for current and future products; manage key supplier relationships and track all materials deliveries
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and government regulations including MIL-STD, UK DEFSTAN, and STANAG testing and qualification requirements
- Act as the connective tissue across engineering, procurement, business development, product, and commercial teams to drive cross-functional alignment
- Identify and resolve blockers quickly; escalate early and provide concise, decision-ready updates on critical tradeoffs
- Build and refine project management tooling, processes, and reporting cadence as the organization scales
- Lead pilots, implementations, rollouts, and operational handoffs
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline — or — prior experience working in a technical engineering role before transitioning to project management
- 4+ years proven experience in technical engineering project management delivering complex hardware products across multiple concurrent projects
- Ideally, experience in defence, aerospace, or another regulated hardware environment; exposure to companies at varying stages of maturity is a plus
- Working familiarity with MIL-STD testing standards, UK DEFSTAN, and NATO STANAG requirements and how these shape project planning and qualification timelines
- Comfort operating across a range of TRL levels—from early rapid prototyping through to production-grade delivery—with sound judgment on how to flex process accordingly
- Genuine start-up mentality: comfortable with ambiguity, resourcefulness, and hands-on problem-solving rather than relying solely on established process
- Track record of hitting ambitious deadlines in fast-moving, resource-constrained environments
- Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to communicate technical risk and progress clearly to both engineers and non-technical leadership
- Willingness to travel to remote environments as needed
Desirable:
- Knowledge of environmental and reliability testing (thermal cycling, vibration, shock)
- Familiarity with electrical systems for a holistic approach to hardware design
- Basic understanding of RF systems and components
- Previous experience working within an R&D workshop environment
- Experience with satellite communications, RF hardware, or extreme-environment systems
- Familiarity with export control considerations (ITAR/EAR, UK export licensing) relevant to dual-use technology
- Experience working with or alongside defence primes, MOD, or NATO procurement processes
Please note: The client is unable to sponsor visas for this position at this time.
